How long do you give a new job?

I accepted a new job at my employer. at their request. After a couple of weeks, it already seems far from what I expected. Far more tedious and data pushing than I had hoped. Do I ride it out aa few more weeks, months, six months? I'm already feeling pretty miserable. Would they want to be told this early I feel I've made a mistake? Or would they want to be told at all?

and yes I'd like it back but I'm open to other things.

Just afraid asking out so soon may not look right - or would they appreciate knowing quickly?

3. First let me say what you probably know...

...you know your employer better than I do. I'm not sure how long you've given it so far. I'm also not sure how specialized your work is. Are you a kidney perfusion tech or do you put lids on the mayo? Where you live could you find other work?

Shooting from the hip 90 days seems like a reasonable amount of time for a fair trial.

Since they had asked me and I agreed, I thought I might have a bit of latitude in saying I thought it was a good move, but it isn't working out.

I've been in the accounting field for 30+ years and jobs can be tough to come by. I have three years wth this company, and it's a decent one to work for in a number of ways. My resume is spotty over the past ten years so I'd like to re-establish a track record of some stability. Factor in that I'm 55 and just jumping to another employer probably wouldn't be easy or ideal right now. Given what's happened with my pension and 401k, I'm probably looking at 12 more years of working, if I'm fortunate enough to keep on somewhere that long!

My old department just re-organized and most everyone got promoted. I think they were waitng for me to leave.

7. Well another update!

The guy that took my spot just told me he was leaving the company! It's not official yet, so I can't jump ahead. But once it's announced, how would I pursue going back? Would I approach my current supervisor, supervisor at my old job, or both? I'm inclined to start with my current supervisor. I'd like to pay him the courtesy, particularly since I may end up staying where I am. But I want to make sure my request gets fully considered, so I've thought maybe current supervisor first, followed by my prior?

9. As Soon as you find a New Job

I would let my new employer know I was unhappy the day after I found a better job. I have heard of places that will fire you for telling them you are looking for another job.
