Elkhorn North High School was dismissed for the day at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday after a maintenance worker was fatally injured, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office and the Omaha Fire Department responded to the school at 10:22 a.m., where they found the 50-year-old man, who was working underground near the school's football field. In a statement sent to students' families, the Elkhorn school district said the man was working in a geothermal well.
"Following a medical emergency impacting a maintenance worker in a geothermal well at ENHS, power has been shut off at the school and students are in Standard Response Protocol of 'Hold,'" the statement said.
"Given that, all students will begin to be dismissed immediately. Students who need to be picked up will be monitored by school staff inside the building and can be picked up as soon as you are available."
