Amazon tripled spending on labor consultants last year amid union push
Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) ramped up its spending on labor consultants last year as it faced increased unionization efforts, according to a Friday filing with the Department of Labor.
The Seattle-based tech giant doled out over $14.2 million in 2022 to several labor consulting firms in "response to large scale union organizing efforts," according to the filing, "including to assist us in expressing the company's opinion on union representation, and to educate employees about the issues, election process and their rights under the law."
Amazon previously told the Business Journal that "as a company, we don’t think unions are the best answer for our employees." It's a sentiment that CEO Andy Jassy has expressed publicly in interviews.
In an emailed statement, Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards said employees are already well supported by the company: "We work hard to support our employees and are proud to invest billions of dollars in safety programs, wages, healthcare benefits that start on the first day of the job, free college tuition, and numerous upskilling programs."
