More than 50 Apple employees have reportedly walked off the job on Christmas Eve and urged customers

to boycott the iPhone maker

Agroup of Apple employees has walked off their jobs on Christmas Eve and are urging a customer boycott on the day — when much last-minute holiday shopping takes place.

The worker advocacy group, Apple Together, called for a walkout on Thursday. Its demands include a more respectful workplace and paid sick time. More than 50 retail employees across several states have already participated in the walkout, according to a HuffPost report.

Apple Together also urged customers to boycott the company during the walkout period. "Don't shop in stores. Don't shop online," the organization tweeted. Information on Apple's website said most stores in the US would be open until 6 p.m. local time on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.

In a follow-up tweet, the group outlined requests that included protections from abusive customers, COVID-19 safety measures, and hazard pay.

1. Apple “corporate” (headquarters) employees and “retail employees “ and outsourcing of manufacturing and customer support. and Apple Resellers.

2. Corporate is top of the heap.

3. When the first Apple stores opened, the employees were elite. For whatever reason, turnover was high.

4. I presume Retail employees have had increasing numbers of reasons to leave, even before pandemic time.

5. Apple profits are more important despite the reputation as liberal.

6. I use an Apple reseller whose employees might be Apple Retail refugees.

I don't know where you got that nonsense from, Apple has always been considered a conservative company.

This smells more like an insider loyalty test than any actual organization…

“The worker advocacy group, Apple Together” - with no spokesperson or previous record of making any of these “demands” prior to encouraging others to walk out.

Isn’t it normal for demands to be made and then, if unmet, to decide on some kind of action?

It seems kind of nebulous to demand “a more respectful workplace” and then call for a one-day walkout on a single day’s notice. It doesn’t seem like any other organized labor action.

…then 50 is not even a significant number among employees who did not go to work that day for whatever reason.

The BLS estimates the normal daily absentee rate to be around 2.8%. With Covid, that is likely higher, but that still means you would expect, on a normal day, around 430 absences.

But a Twitter account and a website run by no identified party which asks interested employees to identify themselves so they can be “vetted” is a heck of thing to ask people to trust.
