But what it does is increase the deficit while shifting the tax burden to pay for it onto the working class. The cult would never vote for that if they understood it, but Trump has had tremendous success by treating them like they're stupid.

It's the old "starve the beast" strategy:

Republicans give huge tax cuts to the billionaires who fund their political careers.

Budget deficits soar.

They pretend to be "fiscal conservatives" and say that "entitlements" are bankrupting our government. Hard choices have to be made.

Republicans have been wanting to dismantle Social Security and Medicare for generations, but a frontal assault on these popular programs is not viable. Instead, they defund our government.

Thusly, more wealth is transferred from working Americans who paid for these earned benifits with deductions from every paycheck to billionaires who buy up more of America's media to spew rightwing propaganda.

Gullible voters then elect con artists who pick their pockets with a promise to "make America great again."
