At the height of the trade war, the country had slipped from the U.S.' top 1 to top 3 trading partner. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, imports from plus exports to China were down from $660 billion in 2018 to just $560 billion in 2019. That number kept almost steady in 2020, while trade with Mexico and Canada decreased significantly in the light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Exports to China stood at approximately $125 billion in 2020, up from around $87 billion in 2019. The bigger share are imports, however. In 2020 goods worth $435 billion entered the country from China, compared with $452 billion in 2019.
