U.S. weekly jobless claims fall more than expected

Reuters

WASHINGTON, March 16 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, pointing to continued labor market strength, though financial markets turmoil is casting a shadow over the economy.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 20,000 to a seasonally adjusted 192,000 for the week ended March 11, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 205,000 claims for the latest week.

Unemployment Insurance Claims:

Initial claims: 192k (down 20k from previous week, previous week revised up 1k),

Continuing claims: 1,684k (down 29k from previous week, previous week revised down by 5k),

"Continuing claims" is what BLS reports call "insured unemployment" in their reports

Continuing claims had been trending up slightly, so am glad to see a reversal in direction.
