How many more warning signs does Mark Zuckerberg need to see before he pulls the plug on his metaverse?

For the uninitiated, the metaverse is a concept or buzzword, depending on who you ask that gained traction among tech and media companies in the last year-plus as the next step in virtual connectivity.
Zuckerberg himself has called it "the successor to the mobile internet." Apple CEO Tim Cook, on the other hand, isn't sure that most people could even define what the heck the metaverse is.
But Zuckerberg is all-in on the idea, even changing his company's name to reflect the big bet. He's touted that the technology already exists to launch people into virtual worlds.
That includes Meta's Quest 2 headset, which costs $400 and can plug users into the company's virtual-reality experience Horizon Worlds. But so far, the overall experience of being in Meta's metaverse is lacking for both the public and even those within the company.

I knew that the Meta thing was a loser the first time I heard of it.
And who didn't know (except Elon) that there were fake users on Twitter.

(1,182 posts)have the bandwidth and processing power required for VR to work worth a damn. Fancy goggles just ain't enough.
If he's marketing this product to rich kids, then that's an ever-shrinking market.
Unless he's attempting to "move fast and break" the Internet porn market, then, well... maybe a different set of "sensors" is needed?

(3,707 posts)He can probably see the MySpace writing on the wall as all the kids are now on Instagram (which he bought) and TikTok (which he can't). If he had any sense he would just generate as much liquidity as possible without triggering a run on the stock so that when it does finally slip beneath the waves he'd still be a billionaire. But some people just can't handle not being king of the world after their fifteen minutes on top.

He doesnt realize he is already in a constructed reality.
Ive known people like that. The only world they experience is one that is designed to insulate them from the actual world. Their judgment is impaired by having been isolated from it.
