Shipping slowdowns costing consumers this holiday season

WASHINGTON (TND) — Less than two weeks away from Christmas, the container ship backlog is getting worse once again.

There are 104 ships waiting to be unloaded. That number is up by about two dozen from the beginning of the month.

A new report shows that consumers are paying more for those slowdowns. According to The CFO Survey, 80% of companies are raising their prices to offset what they're calling "extraordinary cost increases" due to these supply chain issues.

The average American is now projected to spend more than $1,000 on gifts this year — the highest amount in three years.

We start shopping right after Thanksgiving. Absolutely everything we ordered has arrived or will arrive this week. We tend to over-do on the gifts, so it's not as if we're just ordering a few things.

The calendar I always buy for my husband went up $.19 this year, but it went up $1.02 last year and $.25 the year before. We did not buy electronics this year, except for a 4-pack of Tile trackers, which is exactly the same price it was last year.

The item we ordered from Etsy stores came in a reasonable amount of time, so they're apparently not having trouble finding "parts."

Not saying all this isn't happening, but it would be interesting to see specific data on delays and prices, other than just the number of ships waiting. I guess we've just been lucky?

Hubster was done with his by Thanksgiving. The only price increases I have come across is in the cost of food. I’m spending about 10% more than last year for the same stuff.
