U.S. small business owners' sentiment increased slightly in November, but firms continued to grow pessimistic on future economic conditions, data from a survey from the National Federation of Independent Business showed Tuesday.
The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index edged up to 98.4 in November from a six-month low of 98.2 in October, topping the 98.0 consensus forecast from economists polled by The Wall Street Journal.
The NFIB survey is a monthly snapshot of small businesses in the U.S., which account for nearly half of private sector jobs. Economists look to the report for a read on domestic demand and to extrapolate hiring and wage trends in the broader economy.
Optimism among U.S. small-business recovered within months from the pandemic-induced plunge, but fell again following the presidential election and has remained at subdued levels amid successive Covid-19 waves.
