In case you're wondering, the answer is yes, as we all know reasoned debate is a tool of the patriarchy

(36,900 posts)You don't agree with me, therefore you're a misogynist.
You're not a woman so your opinions are irrelevant because gender subjects are beyond the scope of reason.
You have "privilege'" so your opinions are irrelevant.
I speak for all women, even though I don't.
Red herrings galore.
Thanks for sharing the video. I would have missed that one.

(43,049 posts)the background here is about the death and rape threats Caroline Criado-Perez got for pushing for Jane Austen to be on the 10 pound note. At the moment, the only woman besides the Queen is Elizabeth Fry, and she will be replaced by Churchill, and some Brits think that's not enough. Austen will replace Charles Darwin, and other Brits find that reprehensible.
(OK, who are we to chime in with all the women on our money)
I'll pass on that argument, although I see nothing wrong with Jane Austen on the money, should she ever get there, but to have people frothing at the mouth and threatening rape and worse over this is insane and a little thing like a hot button to alert on nasty, and illegal, threats really isn't too much to ask for.

(8,352 posts)No one would argue that what happened was very, very bad. And there is already a button in place. Anyone can report Tweets that are possible violations of actual laws or Twitter's terms of service. A special 'Don't be mean or violent to women' button is not needed.

(36,900 posts)As if there isn't enough law enforcement snooping on internet communications already this simply creates an easy path where any anonymous user can turn in anyone else to law enforcement for any reason. The potential for abuse by both users and law enforcement is colossal all to supposedly solve a problem that has been inherent to anonymous internet communication since the birth of the internet. Anyone who is generally concerned about an illegal threat can file a report with law enforcement just like they can with a threat issued any other way and the appropriate warrants can be issued.
If the cure is worse than the disease it doesn't really matter how reprehensible it is. Not every problem has a workable remedy.
