There is now an "Adult Novelties" shop in my community.

And I don't know how I feel about that. A while ago, I took a pretty hard line anti-porn stance in a thread here, and a couple of the responses did make me rethink that - it was pointed out to me that it can have its place/role.

So, this shop bothers me in the sense it kind of "brings down" the reputation/character of the neighborhood. It's technically not in my community, it's on the other side of the street that serves as the political boundary between two municipalities. I think that it might attract "the wrong crowd".

I also think I'm probably wrong about all of that, at least in terms of the customers - sure it's frequented by all of the affluent men, and women, who live here in this "upscale" fantasy land of a suburb, where little is actually "real world". But, probably wrong in general?

For the record, I have never been to such an establishment, or an adult club or bar. So, I could be completely wrong.

For some reason, they stay away from my door these days, even without it. Maybe they can sense my you-honestly-don't-want-to-fuck-with-me-particularly-before-I've-had-my-coffee aura.

Or maybe it's the 20' tall statue of Aleister Crowley in leather chaps Frotting Ozzy Ozbourne, as the latter bites the head off a bat, that I put on my lawn.

Even here in Korea we get them door to door. The funny thing is instead of answering the door I'll sometimes open the window a little in the room in front of the house (we live in a large apartment building) and peek out. When they see I'm a foreigner they usually just move on. Most of the time I'm walking around in my underwear. I swear one of these days I'm going to answer the door like that and make them think twice about coming back.

Sex and all it entails should be embracced and enjoyed it isnot something to be scared of. Hell put an ad up if they have a board get some experiences and have fun. I have an online profile used for trapping and its fun to get emails etc, though if you have a rocking hot profile that in my humble opinion i do you get hundreds and some strange ones to.

and you see all sorts of people in them.

i bought a vinyl corset at the adult store in the hamburg airport years ago. i was the only woman in the shop and probably the only one under 45, it was an interesting experience.

From upscale ones in London to the seediest of the seedy in Bumfuck PA

The people who go to them are mostly just regular folks

Check it out and see

The two closest to me are really nice places - the atmosphere depends on the store

(Just like a bar can be totally posh or a complete dive)

And the Dubuque government and others in the community reacted like the city was being invaded by heathens. It's not something that I personally would visit but I figured meh, just let it be. And their reasons for opposing the strip club were the same - it could attract the wrong crowd, damage the reputation, and so on.

So the city set to work amending ordinances concerning adult businesses. The owners sued the city on Constitutional grounds before agreeing to settle and close the business. I think it did cause some controversy in the council afterwards about people not being comfortable about the manner in which the city got the business owners to close down the business and that the city government is a little too hostile towards those who don't meet with what the city council idea of good businesses.

and they seem to be pretty well hidden. You have to know what to look for. The adult clubs or bars are illegal yet there are signs all over the place for them (they are called host clubs). The wife and I were walking around in our area and she said there is a big one in a building several blocks from our house.

it's the thing we do most, after maybe eating and sleeping.

But, we can't show it, talk about it, learn about it, or practice it.

Taking a few cues from Victorians, primitives, freethinkers and whatever, what's wrong with having sex as a required subject in High School? Boys and girls would be shown how to do it right without guilt, fear, or violence.

Communal marriages don't seem to work, but open marriages have a better chance and can't getting a little on the side be assumed in many cases? (Personally, I think marriage is obsolete, but it still has a huge following.)

With modern defenses against disease and pregnancy, and easy proof of paternity, shouldn't some of our old ideas be retired?

All-around great post. I don't think being "anti-porn" is necessarily inherently puritanical, but it does run the risk of that at least. Though to be fair, "anti-porn" certainly doesn't have to equal "anti-sex."

....either as a friend or we were dating. It was kind of a big laugh. I was actually quite impressed at one friend of mine, who had just turned 18, admitted she had gone in alone several times to purchase dildos and vibrators.

One of the stores was right on the border of a fairly suburban neighborhood. Like if one street was a car wash and a Micky D's but if your turned the corner, there were houses and trees and a couple with kiddy swing sets.
