After an ankle injury I can't do jogging anymore and at my age the rest of my joints probably wouldn't take it well anyway. I'm partial to road biking.

Don't get my wrong, I am enjoying the Surly Pug I bought, but a fat bike is still just not the same as my hybrid. It's like a heavy duty pickup versus a sports car. It is, however, a great workout, one mile on the Pug feels like about 3 on my Crosstrail Pro Disc.

Well, I managed to do about 3/4ths of my goal of jogging my half mile street. Would have helped if we didn't have 2-3 inches of slippery, packed snow that shifted on the asphalt with every footfall, I did better where there was a little dry pavement down the center of the street on one short stretch.

And, I discovered, the Adidas running shoes I just bought are OK on the treadmill, and even on the wooden gym floor, but kinda suck on asphalt. So, back to the drawing board on that one.

I'm pretty addicted to the gym now, though, after 3 months there. I'm really get the hang of all of the equipment, I am having the best time, the two trainers who are working with me are great, both 22 year old kids with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of heart, although the one guy played college football and looks like he could seriously hurt me if he wanted to, 6'4" and 265 pounds, all muscle, and he pushes me really hard. And frankly, I just like hanging out with the guys talking about no shit in particular in the locker room, lounge, or restaurant. Then, there's the spa, I became friends with the massage therapist, who is in my 6 am fitness class, so that lead to ... a monthly appointment. Another little luxury. It's a great facility, everyone there is really nice, friendly, and supportive. And, well, since this is the men's forum, and hopefully I won't get alerted on for this, I've been enjoying the views, if you know what I mean. I may be middle aged, I may have some "problems", but I'm not exactly dead yet, and there are some pretty attractive ladies, albeit out of my league, over there.

3/4ths of half a mile. That screams wuss, doesn't it? Well, it's a start. At least I didn't go over my AT, well, not by too much, about 10 bpm.

I started that with the Couch to 5K. I made it a few weeks and then converted to straight walking; it made for far less pain.

Did about .65 miles on the treadmill last night, and did the half mile of my street this morning. Kinda enjoyed being out there in 18 degree weather, spitting snow, windchill of 6 degrees. I got some better shoes yesterday, New Balance.

My advice is to stick to the treadmill until spring. One slip on the ice and you *won't* be running this summer.

I am still nursing an injury from 3 years ago when I joined the marathon training team... Did the couch potato to 5k to get prepared for the beginning of the training. Made it to 12 miles and then had a hip flexor injury and tore a ligament in my big toe. That damn toe STILL kills me sometimes. And, the PT for the hip flexor? Horrid. My PT was at a facility that was primary for the local high school football team. Big kids with knee injuries and the such, doing exercises that looked horrid. They would grimace when my therapist would stick her hands about 3 inches into my abdomen while moving my intestines out of the way to get to the hip flexor to work on it. One kid asked how I kept from crying.

So, seriously, ease into your running. Be smart and most importantly, be very careful running outside in snow/ice. I got hurt running hills to improve my time. Injuries suck.
