...high heels look ridiculous? I personally think they make a woman's foot look ugly. From what I've been told by women, that they're uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous. I can only conclude that those who wear them are yielding to some moronic social pressure.
Does anyone feel the same?

(20,277 posts)I'm a woman. I enjoy wearing them. It's key to make sure that they fit properly, and don't buy cheap shoes.
As far as I know, it has nothing to do with "moronic social pressure". I'm perfectly capable of making up my own mind about shoes. I really don't care what other women think.

(20,277 posts)issues facing women these days. I think you are doing women a dis-service by implying that we are weak minded and foolish enough to not be able to make up our own minds about shoes. Heels are not the only shoes available. If a woman finds them uncomfortable, there are plenty of flats or kitten heels to be found.
redqueen
(115,164 posts)and don't mind the discomfort as much after a while.
They literally deform your feet.
I object to the characterization of anyone who adopts social norms which don't harm others as 'weak minded' or 'foolish'. There is intense social pressure on women to look sexy, and high heels are widely considered the sexiest kind of shoe (as well as the default in many professional settings).

(18,569 posts)Those women I've talked to say otherwise. Maybe they all coincidentally have a balance impairment. My recollection is 7 to 2 against wearing them. One of the two in favor was unable to not walk on her tiptoes due to her continuous wearing of heals. The other 7 females, with whom I have discussed the topic, hate them and won't wear them. There is nothing female about that. I happen to feel a tie of any style looks anywhere between foolish and pompous. I refuse to wear one unless I'm being paid to. I don't own one that I am aware of and haven't worn one in over 10 years. Also, IMHO, they look stupid.
Please, please do not take what you inferred as what I meant. For sure I did not imply a disservice to women. Many folks with all attributes of humanity will take measures to be attractive. My personal preferences should never, either for or against a style, decide what anyone I know should wear. It was my interest just to find out if there were others who also either actively disliked the look of heels or just found them neutral but unappealing. I am warned by my wife from time to time that I need to guard against being disconnected.
I find appealing the saying, "There is no man more free than the one who doesn't give a damn what society thinks of him."
Most people who make choices on style do it based on their own ideas. Please don't feel attacked as I respect everyone's right to make their own choices without consulting me or basing their decisions on my ideas. I do feel that most folks imprint their ideas somewhat unconsciously from advertising and the choices of piers.

(17,617 posts)Her legs started to ache, so she changed to wearing the heels all the time. She couldn't adjust to going back and forth without some degree of pain so she chose to wear heels all the time. That seems a bit extreme.

(10,129 posts)"heals" is sort of shorthand for the job healer characters do in games like World of Warcraft. Raids are challenging dungeons in which groups of 10 or 25 players work together to defeat large groups of "enemies" and very tough "bosses." The 3 roles in any raid group are tank, damage per second and healer. Tanks have extremely high defensive stats, allowing them to draw the focus of the mobs to them, while the DPS deal high amounts of damage. Healers; well... they keep the players alive. There are several different classes which can be healers, and each class has different talent builds. The examples I used were Holy Priest and Restoration Druid. As oppsed to Shadow Priests and Feral Druids, which are DPS specs.
"Heels" are a component of womens`shoes.

(18,569 posts)I caught that after reading your second.
opiate69
(10,129 posts)Mainly because:
1) it makes them look taller.
2) it makes then appear to have longer legs.
3) it contracts the calves giving them a more pronounced shape.
4) It forces the gluteus muscles into a different shape, highlighting them also.
Having said that, though, my wife doesn`t like wearing them. She has a hard time with balance on high heels. Plus, lately she`s been having some problems with plantar fasciitis, so wearing them would be way too painful.

(32,886 posts)they are extremely destructive to feet. I think heels are one of the primary reasons that the fastest growing medical speciality is podiatry. There is a photo out there on the internet that shows an xray of a foot in high heels and you can see, there is no way you wear those things day after day long term without doing massive musculoskeletal damage.

As I said upthread my style can be summed up in: "There is no man more free than the one who doesn't give a damn what society thinks of him." My feeling is, if you don't like my shoes, you should indulge yourself in not liking my shoes.

(6,199 posts)some look good and some don't. A lot of them are like clothes, designed to look good on a shelf in the store, not on a human body:
That's not a shoe, it's modern art.
I also find them mostly uncomfortable and dangerous, although if you keep the heel height low and look for wider heels, they can be wearable and even comfortable. A lot depends on the designer and the height.

(33,224 posts)That said, functionally they are a debacle. My aesthetic sense in no way justifies asking a woman to wear the goddamn things.

Of course, there have been plenty of "sexy" footwear styles for women which didn't/don't involve high heels, but for some reason, high heels are the standard bearer.

(5,763 posts)I think women should stop buying them and wearing them because they're painful and bad for the ankles, knees, hips and back.
That being said, I have to admit to a guilty pleasure: I like how they look. It's not their effect on their leg either, it's the posture the rest of the body takes.
And I tend to really respect women who can move gracefully on them. No easy thing.
