And with pictures available. Not at that link (except for one SFW photo).
I post this to show how a non-Christian, blatantly atheist government reacts to consensual sex between adults outside of legally approved marriage. Unfortunately, they treat it pretty much the way our Christian-influenced culture does.
Prudery isn't rooted in religion.

(80,708 posts)But chinese society is heavily influenced by Confucianism, which has a tradition of social conservatism.
Also, terms like "Atheist" in and of themselves tend to bely a western outlook or orientation. Buddhists, for the most part, are also "Atheists"- they do not believe in an eternal deity, that sort of thing.
I dont think "religion" per se is the root of ALL "prudery" (and, then, whats the root of religion?) but i DO think these impulses are related.
I think, for instance, that the obsessive NEED to censor puctures of attractive naked women, that we see among the 2nd wavers, for instance, relates to a hard wired primate impulse in small social groups to control the level, and hence the "value", of general sexual abilability. This is why women often engage in "slut shaming", and why the 2nd wave is so DEEPLY threatened by sex positivity or "slutwalks".
Ths impulse, which basically makes the person mistakenly believe that they are entitled to play cop over the sex lives of others- goes completely bigfuck haywire when confronted not with a small insular hunter gatherer band, but a media rich planet of 7 billion people, very few of whom will listen to exhortations about "you put some clothes on!!!!!!"

(36,917 posts)Excessive prudery is rooted in people who have unhealthy attitudes towards normal sexual behavior. Religion is the power structure which often can and does dictate this dogma, because most people aren't smart enough to differentiate between ethics and religion. Certainly there are other power structures which have warped tenets, especially when that power structure is not accountable to the masses.
