Time and space have no meaning for this question. You could pick a celebrity from your youth and that's fine.
For myself, I'll set the time machine for way back: and date Barbara Eden from her days in "I Dream of Jeanie."

These days: Charlize Theron or Sofia Vergara.

(80,708 posts)Like Sophia Loren circa Boy on a Dolphin. I am NEVER GOING TO HAVE SEX WITH HER so therefore I'm a sad deluded fuck for appreciating her physical attractiveness.
(Not to mention the fact that finding someone sexually, visually attractive means you TURN THEM INTO AN OBJECT which is why you want to have sex with shoelaces and doorknobs and elevator buttons and all those OBJECTS, sicko!)
I guess they missed the part about happily married; and yeah, even if Olivia Munn showed up at my door tomorrow wearing nothing but saran wrap (which would be totally insane, given how ass-cold it is here, now) I would gladly say "sorry, not available, but here's a blanket. Warm up." My wife, I can state with some solid assurance, would do the same thing if that beefy werewolf guy from True Blood showed up. And yeah, she likes him, although she thinks he's a shitty actor.
(this one's for you, honey! 6'5"? Christ!)
The fact that we can both appreciate the physical attractiveness of other humans, with or without the occasional tongue in cheek, does not deter from our relationship and our deep fundamental multi-leveled attraction to each other.
Erm, Because we're grown ups, not insecure teenagers.

I watched a documentary on the doors on OPB a few weeks ago, kind of got me in the mood to listen to them again.

Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)I got on the bus with both around the same time, 1984 or so.
opiate69
(10,129 posts)When REM started going "national", I was already pretty much immersed in the "non-hair" metal of the time (Sabbath, Ozzy, Dio, Maiden etc.. ) and old school prog like Tull, Yes etc.. mainly because that was when I was really developing as a guitarist and to be honest, most of those "college" bands` guitar work was underwhelming (compared to the "guitar gods" of that time at least).. Now, years later, I can better appreciate the songwriting and other aspects of bands like them though. (But no way will I ever get on board with shit like The Smiths, or Joy Division, or any of the New York hipster swill like the Strokes ir Sonuc Youth lol)
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)as for R.E.M., Peter Buck's guitar was, at least the legend has it, a deliberate artistic response to the crazy soloing stuff of the Duane Allmans of the world... which I happen to also like, it's just a different style.
And the truth is that Buck was still learning when those guys started out; although to my mind he put together a tight style and distinctive sound pretty quick. But it's pretty clear from the first few albums that the musicianship was being driven in large part by the team of Mike Mills on the bass and Bill Berry on the drums. I still think that those early IRS years albums- murmur, reckoning, FOTR, lifes rich pageant- hold up real well. Timeless.
Also under-appreciated, IMHO, is the murky psychedelia of early R.E.M.... albums like Murmur, with the right combination of chemicals, you could really get your head inside them for 50 minutes or whatever, kind of the way you can with Dark Side of the Moon. A lot going on underneath the surface.
But, of course, nothing is more subjective than musical taste. I never got into metal growing up; it wasn't on my radar screen- although in my old age I have developed an appreciation for Ozzy much as I have developed an appreciation for Willie.
I did like Jethro Tull and King Crimson, speaking of prog rock.. and speaking of albums that have held up well. I think I spent a good couple months of my junior year in HS doing nothing but smoking pot and listening to "Discipline". So any time I make an "Elephant Talk" joke in meta ("badger.. brou ha ha.. bicker...bicker...BICKER!" that's why.
I was never terribly into the Smiths, either, although I had an exceedingly hot girlfriend in college who was, so that should have put a dent in my psyche. Except she was vegetarian ('vegan' not having yet entered the lexicon) and I was an enthusiastic carnivore, so the whole "meat is murder" thing became a point of friction---- and not the good kind.
opiate69
(10,129 posts)It was just that the chord work, minimalist solo type thing was what I had cut my teeth on early with the Beatles.. (some incredible interplay between John and George on most of their stuff... Still boggles my mind, some of it.) Then again, I also went through a big "hippie" stage.. Wore out my LP of Woodstock, getting baked and trying to play along with Alvin Lee's amazing performance lol.
http://m.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Not of being at Woodstock, of course, but of getting high and watching the movie, too.
It's no coincidence the Dead's performance (except for a shot of Jerry smoking a joint) isn't in there; it's pretty legendary that they were terrible at Woodstock. Not helped, of course, by the fact that the storm picked up as they got on stage, the big sheet behind the stage was acting like a sail and pulling the stage through the mud like a boat, plus every time Bob got close to the mic he would nearly get electrocuted.
You a Jay Mascis fan? Seems like he's widely regarded as one of the guitar guys who was never appreciated as much as he deserved. I was having an early 90s nostalgia moment and I put an old Dinosaur Jr. Album on my ipod... at the time I didn't appreciate the technical aspects of musicianship. I have a lot of musicians in my family and my kids are showing some aptitude for it, though, so I'm developing more of an appreciation for it from that angle. I can't play at all.
opiate69

Now, as to whether or not "finding physically attractive" always = "wanting to have sex with" (not to mention the dubious, if dearly held in certain quarters, assumption that that's a bad thing) that's a different and potentially valid question, no matter where it originates, and if you'd like to start a thread on it, go right ahead.

I tried to get into Firefly, just never got caught up in it. But I respect that people LOVE that show. Maybe I'll give it another shot. Battlestar Galactica is some of the best tv of the past, well, I guess it'd be almost 15 years now. Or whatever. If you have a substantial amount of time to kill, try it from the beginning... seriously it's fairly addictive.

(80,708 posts)...As far as BSG, there was just the 1970s version and then the 2000s version, which was really a different animal.
I'm talking, of course, about the sci-fi channel version from the 2000s, with Edward James Olmos among others:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_%282004_TV_series%29
Dark, gritty, but great drama. I think I tried a few times to watch random episodes and I couldn't figure out what was going on or where the sci-fi was supposed to be. Then I watched it properly from the beginning and, zang.

Besides, he's got the Isaac Newton hair thing going on.
Or this guy who is also rather bright. I can put on my resume that I made Lewis Black laugh. Met him after a show in Oklahoma City. He's absolutely adorable in person and has a totally nice vibe:

He was born in 1911. He always watched the Rockettes in the Macy's Parade.
He liked Sophia Loren and Ingrid Bergman.
His first crush was Lillian Gish.
He made an exception for Marilyn Monroe as a blonde that he liked. People seem to forget that she was an excellent singer in "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend".
He thought Isabella Rossellini was beautiful too. She used to go on Dave Letterman's show and he was gobsmacked. Couldn't talk because she was so beautiful.
Isabella(R) & her famous mother, Ingrid Bergman:
Dad did not read girlie magazines. He thought that was ungentlemanly.
His only comment on that was "Most of them look a helluva lot better with their clothes on."
He never said anything about his single life. Except that when he was 89 years old and dying of cancer, he said "I never had any trouble getting any."
I knew several little old ladies who had crushes on him.

(5,909 posts)I was thinking about her last weekend as she used to date Edward Furlong from Terminator 2, American History X (one of my favorite movies) and I thought he was pretty cute back then. He went through some weird deal prior to their relationship.... he got emancipated from his relatives and was dating his tutor who was twice his age....he was 14 or 15 and she was almost 30...also briefly dated Paris Hilton. Since then he's had a son and gotten arrested several times for various reasons....drugs, domestic violence etc...
My good friend and next door neighbor lives with her mother who is in her eighties and can't take care of herself. I went over to her house last Sunday and her mother always gets the Enquirer and for a laugh I always skim through it. The latest issue had a picture of Edward Furlong looking terrible with some obvious "arm" issues. Very sad.
Natasha Lyonne went through some hard times with addiction but it seems she got it together. I hope EF can as addiction is such a tough thing to beat and usually ends in death as the body can only take so much...here's the picture from the Enquirer:

so the guy is this guy:
Peter Capaldi. I'm like, who's he? Oh, okay, you know who he is? He's the frikkin' dorky kid from the 1983 film "Local Hero" also starring Peter Riegert and the late Burt Lancaster.
to recap:
I'm all, damn. Time doesn't fuck around.

(5,909 posts)I do recognize him and just looked him up and have seen 3 movies he was in. Dangerous Liaisons, Captives, Max (great movie with John Cusack) and he was in World War Z but haven't seen that yet.
Your story reminds me of when I was watching an old episode of Sex and the City last week for about 5 minutes (I watched every episode when it was on...I know, pretty lame but never saw any of the movies) and SJP is talking to some guy in a bar and I'm like is that Bradley Cooper? Yes it was...and obviously very early in his career. He's pretty hot.

(80,708 posts)back then. Plus 21 jump street was -to my mind- firmly ensconced in the cultural zeitgeist of the late 80s, which I was studiously trying to disassociate myself from at the time. I was profoundly pissed to find myself in 1987 instead of, say, 1967.

first off, she probably ought to not do that thing with her tongue. It just looks weird.
That said, I actually kind of like that song. I especially appreciate that it tweaks the "authorities" in exactly the places where they ought to be tweaked- sex, drugs, personal freedom.
A positive message, from the youth.
I mean, it's fucking MTV. If they're not at least a smidge edgy, they're not doing their job. They bleep out the drug reference because... yeah, when have there ever been drug references in rock and roll songs?

(80,708 posts)I don't think it's any worse than any of the other appearance-based, lookist and paradigm reinforcing optically oppressing acts of perception-based objectification quantopenritionializing culuranormapaflapzing and wholly unauthorized arousal incidences in this thread.
So superficially finding people -any people, really- sexually attractive on the basis of physical appearance is either no big deal, or it's THE WORST FORM OF AWFUL SLAVERY-LIKE OPPRESSION IN TEH HISTORUH OF TEH EWORLD ZOMG O NOES.

And I have to say, I never would have heard of the song, the video OR the controversy if it weren't for DU! I learn so much here! Usually the bands I like don't make videos, or if they do, they're not all that controversial. When's the last time your read a breathlessly outraged huff-ton post piece about a Railroad Earth video? You haven't.
leaving all that aside, it's hard to argue that Ms. Ratajowski is anything but, um, quite hot indeed.
RiffRandell
(5,909 posts)She's my husband's favorite girl in the video, although they are all gorgeous. Perhaps this is TMI, but she has the most perfect breasts...and they're real.
I learned that when Robin Thicke was on Howard a few weeks ago...really good interview...he's a cool dude.
Oh, and thanks for the no Tatum-torment.

(5,909 posts)My boyfriend I had at the time came home home from work one day and was like, I heard this new band I really like (we always listened to this RI college station) so we got into Nevermind about 6 months before everyone else.
Kurt was one of the types I went for....I loved guys who had shaved heads or shaggy hair and wore punk t-shirts, flannels and ratty sweaters...that's pretty much what I wore.
Will always regret not seeing them live...they were playing in Mass when I lived in CT but for some reason couldn't go and figured I would see them next time. Never got the chance.
Posted a picture of him once on FB and my 18 year old niece was like, who is that?

(80,708 posts)I hear you. What's funny is that whole "Grunge" look was supposed to be something revolutionary that just popped out of the aether in 1991 or so... ridiculous. That was pretty much how we all looked in college, in the late 80s. Of course, we didn't think it was a fashion statement, more like just cheap clothes to go out drinking in.

I have a memory from my drinking days of sitting in a dive bar with some coworkers, when suddenly a very drunk homeless guy burst through the front door waving a 12 inch purple jelly dildo. He proceeded to run around the bar swinging it like mace windu's lightsaber, chased by the staff, going "weeeeweeeeweeee yayyaaaaayaaaa weeeeeweeeeweee wooohoo" or something to that effect.

In this thread it was the first time I met some of you, got on a list as 'a frequent poster in the Men's Group' in an alert which is fucking hilarious.

I'm very particular when it comes to hot celebs. A few years ago I'd have said Eddie Vedder or Lou Barlow (which I think I did say in a sequel thread), but times change and now it's Colin Morgan. He was awesome in Merlin and Humans and not as great in The Fall...

I just delved down into the battlefield of GD-P to bemoan the premature end of a really meaty bit of drama unfolding in one thread with the source of the drama being so cruelly booted with a hidden post.
