1. What he is saying about diamonds is true. However

I was married three times without a diamond engagement ring.

But there is a fairly long history of the engagement ring as a form of collateral in other societies.

But I'm fairly certain the diamond and their hyped value is not too far off. In fact I think the whole industry behind the ceremonial aspect of weddings is commercialized to the point of lunacy.
