The male majority

This discussion thread was locked by lumberjack_jeff (a host of the Men's Group group).

I speak, of course, about the fact that the majority of people being imprisoned, abused and killed in prison, are male.

Why would it be sexist to talk about in those terms and why would anyone interested in gender equality try to silence a discussion of it?

At Sun Dec 29, 2013, 08:16 AM an alert was sent on the following post:

Don't worry, it's mostly young males I bet.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=4244807

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

Attempting to make a sexist point from an important post,

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Sun Dec 29, 2013, 08:25 AM, and the Jury voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT and said: Enough.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: It's a jackass thing to write, but I don't think it's all that disruptive. Ignore it.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: How is it sexist to talk about male incarceration rates? Silly alert.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: This poster has a long history of controversial opinions- and I vote to leave it, because I think there is a point here that will make people think about whether this might really be a gender issue.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

A few months ago a well known sock wearer crafted a creatively written and ultimately successful alert, then attempted to whip up a PPR campaign in MIRT against yours truly because I mentioned the 60% drop in rape victimization.

She didn't realize that I was a member of MIRT too. I'm glad that due to changes in the way alerts are handled, that their role is now largely ceremonial.

She was apparently sick and tired of being victimized and silenced by people posting sourced, defensible truths.

That's kind of a stunning abuse of being on MIRT.

I did 2 terms on MIRT and I am glad to say that there was none of that witch hunt shenanigans. We all worked together and it was pretty harmonious.

a campaign like he described are 2 different things. Personal grudges have NO place in MIRT.

When I was on MIRT, there were a few people that posted only rarely. People get busy at work and in their lives.

I almost never curse on DU but I cursed him in mirt for his complaints how we do things when he never did a damn thing. The admins know my opinion and I will swear on as many bibles that he did nothing and the person he is talking sbout did nothing in mirt that pushed any agenda. She was a great member and the Lord God knows she did a great job on mirt.

a) you aren't in a position to know what I did, you only know what I posted. To me, there isn't much benefit to posting attaboys and high fives for ppr'ing some designer kitchen spammer.
b) with what... 20 people on the MIRT team? There will always be several who, like me, only banned a couple of posters.
c) "The Lord God" knows what her intentions were, because he can read her post about this issue as well as I could.
d) "swear on a bible that I did nothing"? Is false witness frowned upon in your circle of friends? Perhaps you should check in with that Lord God to clarify your statements. Cursing is the least of your sins.

My degree of participation in the MIRT board is irrelevant to the topic. The poster in questions jihad against me is relevant to the extent that it reflects a cultural shift on DU.

"Me too" has never been my thing. It became quickly clear to me that my highest and best use in MIRT was to complain about misuse of authority.

The kernel of truth of what you say is this; I'm apparently not temperamentally suited to purity testing new posters to find reasons to keep them out of our club.

In my experience, MIRT is meta with live ammo. I think it's interesting how the prevailing culture of intimidation improved once most of the ammo was taken away.

But the jihad launched against me was real, it was vindictive, it was dishonest and ill-intentioned.

about how you conducted yourself. You never even tried and don't act like you did us any favors because you did not. Your points in mirt were wrong. The admins were happy how we did things.

If you paid more attention you would have known our job was a lot of meta. There are plenty of good criticism of mirt but you were in no position to point it out. If you wish to challenge this go to ATA and ask skinner and please use my name.

18. So happy that admins took away most all of their authority?

I did pay attention, and MIRT's job is NOT meta. It's cleaning house - "taking out the trash" of spammers and newbie trolls, not whipping up support to ban 25,000 post count star members.

There's nothing to ask in ATA, he's already fixed the problem.

Bonobo, I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to lock this thread. It's gone off on a tangent.

You can't have it both ways. You can't say that most crimes are committed by men and men are violent - which means prison. Then turn around and say that any discussion of the rape and abuse of those prison inmates is 'sexist'.

Rape and abuse happens to both genders.
