4. Argumentation. I can't help it, it's in my nature.

1) what distinguishes what he's doing from an expensive hobby or a very large christmas shopping list? I'm down with the idea of nobless oblige and he appears to be using his wealth in positive ways, but he's spending his money on what he deems appropriate. Are his goals the same as that of the community? Aside from the concerns about the ad-hoc and parochial nature of his charity him, (does the need for charity end at the Tangelo Park city limits?) I think there's something to be said for coordination of effort. In my area, nonprofits work closely together to promote the wellbeing of the community in a collective, collaborative and mostly democratic way.
The Santa Claus model of charity certainly has some things to recommend it, but I wouldn't expect it to work everywhere, if for no other reason than not every community has a Santa.

5. Nothing really

Other than one is charity and the other may or may not be. You might also be able to argue that the money could be better spent in other charitable endeavors.

However, what he seems to have done is put his money behind a very good idea. Imagine if every parent had access to daycare and every child that graduated high school had access to higher education. If we didn't spend 5% of our GDP on the military these things would be possible nationwide. Not only would the US be a much better place, but such an investment would have a pretty good chance of paying for itself, unlike investing in tax breaks for the rich and wars for oil which were promised to pay for themselves and did exactly the opposite.

6. Great post. So much common sense, yet so many don't seem to see it.

I was struck recently by the fact that food stamp programs cost the average taxpayer about $3 a month. Compared to how much of their paycheck that goes to the military budget...?

7. Those who argue against SNAP generally do so for racist reasons

They can't stand the thought of "their" money going to minorities and lack the number of actively firing synapses to figure out that keeping the minimum wage ridiculously low only insures more of it will.
