Charlie Rose annoys me, but an extended interview with Sec. Kerry should be interesting.

(59,969 posts)Compared to everyone in both parties, he is just so thoughtful, and honest about where we are on everything. Even compared to his Senate days, he is so willing to just simply explain what he thinks is happening and where we have to go.

(9,688 posts)NOT yesterday's .
Looks like it will take a while to show up on the Charlie Rose website.
But in case it's of interest. . THIS one is from several years ago, when Kerry was still senator and chair of SFRC. He was already emphasizing the importance of climate change, of the need to educate students to speak foreign languages and to understand history and culture. .

He's really, really good.

(10,117 posts)...really really good. 😀 I just don't know how some people can continue to not understand what Obama/Kerry foreign policy is about. All they'd have to do is watch one interview like this and it's SO clear! I can understand having a different opinion...but not those that pretend the policy is unclear.
I loved the question about what his concerns are for the future. He talked, at length, about young people and their future and how important our leadership is in giving them hope. I've worked with kids on gang prevention and it's the same problem. What the US and our allies do can prevent the worse case scenarios.
He really did do a great job in this interview. 👏👏👏

(59,969 posts)What I also saw as very good was the many many times that he credits Obama and is entirely clear that the policy - even if it was something he worked his heart out for - was something that President Obama took the risk politically for and it comes clear that he is genuinely honored by the latitude Obama has given him. That and his unwillingness to join some of the others who are already positioning themselves as to what they advised Obama to do. (Note - not speaking of Clinton, she is out of office and obviously should be clarifying what her own foreign policy would have been. )
I really look forward to the book he intends to write -- as I am sure everyone does. If it is similar to the speeches and interviews he has given, I would imagine that it should be very insightful, positive and inspiring --- and nothing like many other books whose main goal was to elevate the author.

(9,688 posts). . . this is the action of a strong person, a classy person.
His book should be wonderful, and of lasting value. And I hope that he will take the time to get it just the way he wants it, rather than bowing to publisher's wishes to rush it into print.

(59,969 posts)significant book. Unlike others, the publisher would likely have very little leverage to push him at all. He clearly does not need the money and he is not rushing it meet an electoral deadline. He might even want a little time for himself before he starts as he clearly has pushed himself mercilessly since he got the office -- and a bit of time would likely only add to the perspective he can give.
I love that he (and the people dearest to him) completely know that he has accomplished a tremendous amount at a time when that was not easy. I suspect that in addition to books, that the climate change speech he gave this week, might suggest that he will try to continue to be a force cheerleading the efforts to get businesses excited about the potential of clean energy. I somehow can not see him retiring to just pleasant time with Teresa, friends and family, Red Sox games, water sports and sailing etc.

(10,117 posts)...President Obama and the office of the President as an institution. He is always very careful to credit the President where appropriate. He is very loyal to him and his office. I think that is one reason I have such great respect for him.
There are so many politicians who have never learned respect for our institutions of democracy, honesty, loyalty, the importance of civility, etc. (Some are even running for President.) 😜 I think that alone should disqualify them from higher office.
Also, I love your signature quote !
