Daniel Landry has spent six summers of his young life playing at the feet of former Mayor Kevin H. White — the bronze statue, that is — and in a chance encounter at Faneuil Hall yesterday with a senator, the freckle-faced lad discovered the towering tribute honors the stuff of Boston legends.

“Do you know who this is?” U.S. Sen. John Kerry, 68, quietly asked the suddenly silent, wide-eyed boy, after the Bay State’s senior senator placed a bouquet of white roses at the larger-than-life feet of his late friend’s noble likeness.

“A famous man,” the 8-year-old East Boston tyke bashfully answered, wringing a knit hat clenched in his small hands and twirling a toy lobster buoy. His mother explained that he had seen the statue on TV, and recognized it, so they came down.

Kerry smiled.

“It’s nice. It’s nice that you’re here,” Kerry reassured the boy, as both turned their gazes to White’s face and the 60 years between them vanished in the intimacy of the moment

Now, I do not know a lot about the history of Boston in the 70s and of mayor White, but I was somewhat puzzled that Kerry was the only one I saw on TV making statements (Boston does not lack people with big egos). Am I missing something?

2. Cute story - I wonder if the little boy is the one in the video

If so, I hope that his parents find a way to save that little video clip - showing him with Senator Kerry.

I would love to read one of the Massachusetts people answer your question. It sounds like White has been out of things for a very long time. It may be that people like Patrick really had little personal contact. From some accounts, it seems Barney Frank and Menino worked for his administration. Both are listed as being part of the service for White. It may be they are working on their eulogies and want those comments, not something off the cuff, to be taken as their comment. It sounds like his legacy is mixed - as most are.

Here is the Boston Globe coverage of Kerry's words. http://www.boston.com/Boston/metrodesk/2012/01/senator-john-kerry-pays-tribute-senate-floor-former-boston-mayor-kevin-white/8b6YkQ9NjiJ99W4ATpU5HJ/index.html?comments=all

I just learned that there seems to be no length of time constraint on editing - which means, I can fix typos and other messes, so I don't look like an idiot!
