It;s actually pretty impressive given his 68 years that he is still comfortable skating and playing. Wasn't there something said in 2004 of Kerry and his daughter and Teresa's sons and JK playing hockey at Christmas in Idaho one of the years when they were first a combined family.

Cute moment when Obama shook his hand and told him with a smile to "stop playing hockey" and for Brownie ( ) to be "the enforcer for this guy."

That said, hopefully he is fully aware of the concussion aspects though.

OTOH, somebody seriously needs to moderate his page.

He was playing with friends and family. Teresa is very well informed - especially as she had a concussion a few years ago. But, the real experts are his daughter, Dr Vanessa Kerry, who graduated with honors from Harvard Medical School and her husband, who is a brain surgeon. So, just in house, he has a huge amount of medical expertise.

I would guess that he has been injured playing sports before - and will ignore the President's advise.

and Dr. V Kerry's husband being a brain surgeon (he was doing resarch during the time Uncle Ted's health had declined). That is good to know there are some Docs in the family.

Though it will not stop people from clowing on him (thinking there is more to his injuries), he seems to take it in stride that the President had 12 stitches from and elbow to the lip. Ouch!

Most assumed that it was an accident or out of revenge, mostly because of the popular public image of the First Couple. Therefore, he was able to escape further speculation of his injury while other pols cannot. (It is also trust issue).

I think hockey may be the President's least favorite sport (basketball is his favorite, football, then baseball).

The reason may be because there is a lack of racial diversity in that sport. All they do is fight, shed blood, and sit in a penalty box. Football, yes it is exciting and violent, they have stricter rules when it comes to hits. Basketball gives fines for flagrant fouls and has more diversity.

IDK what to think about his comment, except that he and Brownie were going to play hoops on one one two years ago (not sure if it really happened). Brownie was also present at the Medal of Freedom ceremony when Boston Celtics HOF Bill Russell was being honored and a statue being built in his honor. IDT the Senator was there, or if he has said anything because that is a big deal given Boston's troubled racial history.

Though it has/had to be embarassing for the Senator, he seemed to laugh it off. Hopefully Team O will still use him as a surrogate for the upcoming election.

It may just be that Brown was there too.

As for Bill Russell's award ceremony, I do not remember if he was there or not, but you may want to remember something really big was happening at this time in foreign policy (Middle East revolutions), Given that Brown is a fan of basketball with not that much to do, he may have let him go there thinking the state would be represented?

he looked uncomfortable doing so.

That is right the Middle East revolutions were happening at the same time. They panned out to the audience and Brownie's head was there, but both Senators have to submit letters or nominations for MOF in advance, so no biggie. It made sense for him to go and the Senator to go the Bruins WH reception (despite the drama).

We disagree from time to time, but thanks for the extra stuff.

I realize that they were joking - and that Kerry would likely be back on skates the next chance he gets. I just thought the comment that Brown be the "enforcer" sounded weird and rather demeaning to Kerry - as Brown is so junior in every way.

I think they already used Kerry. Kerry, took advantage of the fact that the Manchester Union, the biggest paper in NH was supporting Gingrich, to get an op-ed that contrasted Romney's lousy positions on foreign policy with Obama's successes. I have no doubt in my mind that the real target was the NH independents who could go to Romney in the fall. (I think Gingrirch is less a threat.) Kerry and Romney have long fought on foreign policy in the Boston papers - and many things Romney wrote then - that Kerry took apart then - could be used to make the case that he has no foreign policy experience.

Yep. It sounds like it was a joke (like various takes on the Senator's injuries) and would come across as demaning or just caught up in the moment. Unless he knows/understands how desperate Brownie is (SOPA/PIPA stance, showing up for MLK Day BoBreakest), given he is up for re-election. Though he will support E. Warren.

I am not a fan of DC gossip books, but the excerpt in "The Obamas" about Michelle not happy with the way the WH handled the special election to replace Uncle Ted is interesting, (if true?)

This won't stop Senator Kerry for putting on the skates, he will just probably want to have some extra protection!

That is good if they have used the Senator. He will probably do more in state campaigning (even though he, Al Franken are two of several pols with Gov. Patrick included in the Obamas campaign's celebrity wish list as surrogates). If Romney is the nominee, we will probably be hearing a lot from Patrick, given his knowledge of MA state politics and close relationship with the President. If Newt is nominated, we may (or not) hear from B. Clinton more.

Kerry's really good mood. While I can imagine that anyone would prefer not to be in public with the injuries he had, he soon after went to the Middle East for important meetings, went to a Patriots game, went to this WH celebration, which the other Senator may have skipped, and then went to the SOTU, where he was seen by millions. It says something that he completely took this in stride.

His interactions with the people around him - more obvious as there was no real sound, show someone completely unlike the media's stereotype. I seriously can't picture Romney (or even Brown) handling this with the ease and humor Kerry did.

From Foreign Policy, in Kerry's own words:

Kerry also explained to The Cable why he returned to Washington with two black eyes and a swollen nose. He said he did a face-plant while playing hockey with some friends in Massachusetts.

"I was playing hockey and I met the ice ... crunch!" Kerry said. "I was trying to avoid a guy, I tried to leap over him ... it seemed like the nice thing to do."

..same episode as the FLOTUS appearance. IMO, it was overall pretty lighthearted though I doubt it was funny to JK at the time! I cannot speak for JK of course but I have a feeling he'd LOL this off..he seems to have a pretty good sense of humor! (starts at 7:25) :

http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/video/tuesday-january-31-2012/1382456#.Tymi2UTnyBc.twitter

Though we all know it wasn't Wii Hockey...I think JK's opponents/people who poke fun are just jealous of his athleticism "at his age" (though imo he appears and seems at least 10 if not 20 years younger, both physically and the spirit/energy he conveys!), particurally the men! hehe ;D

In all seriousness though, I was so sad when I first saw the pics/footage after the injury..yowl! Though he seems and appears to be healing nicely, from the floor speech the other day as discussed in the thread about the late Boston mayor. I agree with karynnj and others here that he shouldn't feel like he has to stop playing hockey (though I think the POTUS was just making a lighthearted jab there..guy stuff lol ..though I do hope he'll be careful (I'm sure he always is-you never can 100% prevent accidents like these)-we need him!

I agree with you that he looks younger and is clearly more active and fit than almost anyone his age. I'm impressed that he just kept his appointments in the MiddleEast - even though he likely had to explain his appearance more than he would have wanted.
