The Ministry of Culture, through the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Lambayeque (DDC), supervised and verified the progress of the first stage of the research work of the Cultural Landscapes of Úcupe - Zaña Valley Archaeological Project that began on June 3 at the Los Paredones de la Otra Banda - Las Ánimas Archaeological Complex, located in the districts of Zaña, 48 kilometers from the city of Chiclayo.
Two archaeological units have been excavated at this site, discovering in the first remains of religious monumental architecture belonging to the formative period that would be approximately five thousand years old, according to the director of the Archaeological Project of Cultural Landscapes of Úcupe - Zaña Valley, Dr. Luis Armando Muro Ynoñán.
"We are probably looking at a five-thousand-year-old religious complex that is an architectural space defined by walls built of mud. We have what would have been a central staircase from which one would ascend to a kind of stage in the central part," he said.
The temple reveals friezes with anthropomorphic images in high relief that present a human body with a bird's head, feline images and reptile claws. Special ceremonies were held here and a wall covered with fine plaster with a pictorial design was discovered on the upper part.
In the second archaeological excavation unit, ceremonial architecture was found, dating from the late Moche period, between 600 and 700 AD. The monument has buttresses and bases of a large stepped platform. The burial of an infant of approximately 5 to 6 years of age, dating from a later period, was also identified at the site.
The director of the Archaeological Project of Cultural Landscapes of Úcupe - Zaña Valley, Dr. Luis Armando Muro Ynoñán, said that this research is funded by the Catholic University of Peru and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
These investigations seek to examine the emergence, evolution and development of the ceremonial center and elite cemetery of La Otra Banda and Úcupe, which were built and consolidated regionally between the Formative and Moche periods , in association with several other emerging centers in the Jequetepeque Valley and Lambayeque.
The project is authorized by Directorial Resolution No. 000240-2024-DCIA-DGPA-VMPCIC/MC, of the General Directorate of Archaeological Heritage of the Ministry of Culture.
