Guatemalan Indigenous authorities demand resignation of Attorney General

Guatemala City, Sept 18 (EFE).- Indigenous authorities demonstrated Monday in Guatemala’s capital, demanding the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras for her actions against Bernardo Arévalo’s electoral victory. “The actions taken by Attorney General Porras are not legal. We can’t hide from the truth, her intention to undermine the will of the people is obvious,” Misarai Xoquic, Indigenous mayor of the department of Sololá, told journalists.Xoquic, along with about a thousand demonstrators from different Indigenous Peoples of the country, marched through the streets of Guatemala City, stopping to display slogans in front of various public institutions in rejection of the judicial actions that have tainted the 2023 electoral process. “If Attorney General Porras does not resign, we will have to blockade the country, take over the highways and paralyze the ports,” warned Xoquic. The protest by the Indigenous authorities comes eight days after the Attorney General’s Office entered the headquarters of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and opened boxes of votes from the first round of elections on June 25 (breaking the chain of custody) citing indications of anomalies on election day.
The Attorney General’s Office, headed by Porras, has been trying since July 12 to cancel the party of President-elect Bernardo Arévalo, the Seed Movement, who won the election on August 20.
Porras and the rest of the institution’s leadership have received sanctions from the United States for “undermining justice.”
In early September, the president-elect accused Consuelo Porras of leading a “coup d’état” to prevent him from taking office on January 14.
Due to the tensions and judicialization of the elections in Guatemala, the transition process between the current president, Alejandro Giammattei, and Arévalo is under the supervision of the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro.EFE
