Brazil’s Federal Police have released a report detailing evidence that an aide to former President Jair Bolsonaro was involved in a plan to stage a military coup, following the far-right leader’s defeat in the 2022 elections.

Released on Friday, the report alleges that the aide, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, “gathered documents with the objective of obtaining ‘legal and juridical’ support for the execution of a coup d’état”.

Those documents were recovered from Cid’s cellphone, according to the report, and they outlined potential steps to prevent the transfer of power to Bolsonaro’s successor, current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro’s narrow defeat had proven divisive, fuelling far-right protests and threats of violence in the weeks leading up to Lula’s inauguration. A week after Lula was sworn into office, Bolsonaro supporters converged on the Three Powers Plaza in the capital Brasilia on January 8, attacking government buildings in an apparent attempt to spark a military coup.

BRASILIA (Reuters) -One of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's closest aides sought legal advice for a military intervention that would have prevented the handover of power following last October's election, federal police said on Friday.

Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid was one of Bolsonaro's personal assistants who stayed on as an aide after he stepped down. He is under arrest over allegations that he faked Bolsonaro's COVID-19 vaccination card.

According to an analysis of Cid's seized cell phone, a federal police report said he had "gathered documents with the aim of obtaining 'legal and judicial' support for the execution of a coup d'état."

Cid's lawyer Bernardo Fenelon said in a statement that his client would only defend himself to investigators.

The actions are part of Operation Venire , launched this Wednesday, which investigates the practice of crimes in the insertion of false data on vaccination against Covid-19 in the Ministry of Health systems (SI-PNI and RNDS systems).
Max Guilherme and Sérgio Cordeiro, Bolsonaro advisers who worked in Planalto, were also arrested, in addition to the municipal secretary of Government of the city of Duque de Caxias / RJ, João Carlos de Sousa Brecha.

CNN found that Mauro Cid's daughter and wife are also involved in the PF investigation, as their vaccination data would have been tampered with as well .
