Hillary Clinton is a complicated woman running in a country that wants its political platforms to fit on a truckers cap. As a candidate, she has taken a lot of heat from progressives for being late to coming around to marriage equality. She was, but its not that simple. If you scratch just a little beneath the surface, youll find a true champion of LGBT rights throughout the world.
>>>snip<<<
One accomplishment that has received scant attention is that she ushered gay rights onto the international stage. It is fair to say that without Clintons efforts, the global struggle for equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people would not have proceeded as fast as it has in the past several years, nor would the United States be seen today as a global leader in that struggle. At the heart of these efforts was the 2011 United Nations Human Rights Council Resolution on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, otherwise known as the UNHRC Gay Rights Resolution, an international agreement whose drafting and signing Clinton oversaw. With that document, and a sister UNHRC resolution of 2014 condemning anti-LGBT violence and discrimination, the UN has formally recognized gay rights as part of the international human rights regime.
Clintons gay rights crusade began within the State Department, which she transformed into one of the mostif not the mostgay-friendly bureaucracies in Washington, both in terms of its policies and its administration. This signaled a radical makeover for the stodgy institution, which under Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, Clintons predecessors in the George W. Bush administration, had seen little drive for gay equality. Largely beholden to the Christian right and social conservatives, the Bush administration was hostile toward LGBT people and issues. As president, Bush endorsed an amendment to the federal constitution banning same-sex marriage, and his political managers used same-sex marriage as a wedge issue during his reelection campaign in 2004 with the intention of mobilizing so-called values voters in swing states like Ohio.

Here she is with her own words:

Dont take my word, or hers, for it. Shes been endorsed by nearly every LGBT organization.

(12,477 posts)2. Thank you for this.
It helps me with some friends I have who say she is anti all of the issues important to LGBT community. I know it isn't true, but having facts to use is really helpful. These are indys who say they won't vote for her at all.
I think there is so much misinformation out there with regard to Secretary Clinton that we need to work hard to dispel as much as we can.

(25,685 posts)4. We need to correct the record on so many issues. So many lies and distortions about HRC.
And the sad part of it is the RW has been spewing this crap for over 20 years and people, even good Democrats and progressives believe it.
