Hillary Clinton’s “glass ceiling” speech, the most memorable piece of oratory in her political career, once marked the end of her presidential hopes; now, her supporters see it as an inspiring prelude.

Eight years to the day after she declared that, thanks to the number of people who voted for her, the highest, hardest glass ceiling of all had “about 18 million cracks in it,” Clinton is set to make history as the first woman to become her party’s nominee.

And as she prepares to claim victory Tuesday night in her protracted fight against Bernie Sanders, she is likely to reference her own parting comments in the 2008 race, etched in pain but delivered with hope, as she conceded defeat to Barack Obama, according to aides.

While Clinton’s speech is famous for her “18 million cracks” line, the most important thing she shattered that day may have been the barrier of distrust between herself and Obama. Clinton’s fulsome embrace of her rival that day is now expected to pay dividends as the popular sitting president returns the favor for his former secretary of state. And if Sanders, who is still talking of a contested convention, refuses to drop out, he could look stingy by comparison.

I didn't get many welcoming posts when I started out on DU back in 2004 under the name needle driver, nor when I came back in 2007 as needledriver.

You're right - I almost have a point. If you drill down far enough in the dictionary definitions you eventually get to the ones where fulsome does not have a negative connotation, but still, fulsome is one of those funny words that doesn't mean what it sounds like it should mean, like homely or inflammable.

Fulsome praise is no praise at all, and don't think you can't set something on fire because it is inflammable, and whatever you do - don't tell someone you think their house is homely!

Politico article writer Annie Karni's line about "Clinton’s fulsome embrace of her rival" actually means the exact opposite of what she intended it to mean.
