Barack Obama
Related: About this forumThe election is over. We won. We need this haven once again. I do.
Over the past 6 months I tried my very best to build some bridges on DU and some real relationships so that people would know that Obama supporters are liberals. We support LGBT civil rights and feminism and we support every liberal cause there is. I believe I succeeded, too. I made some really good friends in surprising places. It was gratifying to see their support for President Obama's reelection, too.
But if ever I needed a safe haven it's now. Thank goodness for the Obama Group. Because I support the man we just reelected. Not blindly but because I think he's a smart person who will do his best. And because I am a proud Democrat.
On a personal note, you may remember that I had a family issue that was difficult to deal with. It is still ongoing but at least I'm home. I brought the family member home to live with me. Some days are good and some days are really hard. But family is family, right? You love them so you take care of them.
Anyway, thanks for being here.

(10,001 posts)and try to ignore those who have been rude to me or to others. There are so many wonderful DU-ers that I can't let a few ruin my experiences here. How good of you to take care of your family member. And please remember that, when things get difficult for you at home, you can always come visit your on-line family right here.

We're going to have an awesome four more years together with Obama being the President and I refuse to let any negativity attempt to spoil so much as a day.

(22,541 posts)It has always been us. He made that clear from the start. My vision, and I'm sure yours, is that we do things in a positive way. We work for things together. We talk things through and decide the best course of action. Call us crazy, right?

(24,544 posts)The endless crying... I've hated it for a while but then I just stopped caring. Even about arguing with these people. They are too far gone to be worth the effort. I honestly believe that they are going out of their way to be as thoroughly and completely insignificant to the process of American democracy as possible and I'm all too happy to help them along that path by not paying them the slightest bit of attention.
I have had the most wonderful Christmas week. It has been so relaxing. How about you?? Did you have a good Christmas?

(94,446 posts)... and got re-addicted. I tossed 'em five bucks for a star on election night so I could try to follow the waves, but things have gotten so bad here lately that some days it is like wading through sewage. I can't believe the hatred that is allowed here.
That said, I did rediscover the BOG, and >whew<! Seems a lot of my old friends have managed to stick it out.
Thanks for the howdy, Number23.

Did you enjoy your Christmas?

(94,446 posts)The previous week I took the 8 year old to see The Hobbit, but in the weeks leading up to that I read the whole book to him.
I love being a grandma.
I hope your Christmas was wonderful! Happy New Year!

(4,801 posts)I don't post much, but I read every day--sometimes several times a day. I need this place, too. Sometimes, what's "out there" in GD and elsewhere is just downright depressing. I know that when I come here I will find rational discussions, and people who value critical thinking over knee jerk reactions. Thanks for that. This is an oasis.

(3,502 posts)In terms of personal philosophy I'm pretty much for social democracy. There really is hardly anything that would be too liberal for me when it comes to a wishlist. I also live here in reality and I think that the only hope for progress is to try to bring the country to the left little by little and I think the president is doing what he can in that regard. I don't think that every compromise is out of desire to give on one point or other. I also think he's provided the only workable model for moving forward by winning elections.
I read more than I post, but it's good to have one place where Democrats support the Democratic president.

(41,832 posts)are that so many are just so unrealistic and immature about how the political process works.
We can all wish for every liberal idea to come into being, but it is just not going to happen with wishing.
DU is not the real world.
I know many here like to think this is a liberal country, but it is not. I bet most people consider themselves to be in the center.
Either right-center or left-center. We have to face it... the left/progressives are a minority. Acting like assholes is not the way to win people over.
It is easy to say what we want. The hard part is the process of getting there. It's long and hard and messy. But I've loved seeing Obama's long game. He has offered them less and less and less and they have looked more and more and more foolish every time they turned him down.
Brilliant just doesn't quite cover it. Calculating. Incremental. Obama is serving his revenge cold. Very, very cold. I'm fascinated with it now that I've seen the picture. Finally.

(4,801 posts)..."so many are just so unrealistic and immature about how the political process works." I teach critical thinking at the college level, and am continually dismayed at the lack of such in my students. By the time I am finished with them, they are much better, but it is still difficult to instill when there is essentially no foundation to begin with. There is way too much knee-jerk, reactionary thinking (which isn't really thinking, just emotional reaction) out there, and not enough reasoned, rational thinking. Anyway... yeah... unrealistic and immature. Bingo.

(176,775 posts)Seems like many members think that President Obama has dictatorial powers and can snip his fingers to make things happen. Funny thing is that if he did, the same people would be squawking the loudest.
