Obama Says He'll Be Too Emotional To Speak At Daughter's Graduation

“I'm going to be wearing dark glasses ... and I’m going to cry.”

Even though he's a pro when it comes to graduation speeches, President Barack Obama revealed on Wednesday that he had turned down a chance to speak at his own daughter's graduation later this year.

During lunch with local residents at the Jolly Pumpkin in Detroit, Obama said he couldn't give the address because he expected he would be too emotional.

“Malia's school asked if I wanted to speak at commencement and I said no,” Obama said, according to ABC. “I'm going to be wearing dark glasses ... and I’m going to cry.”

Malia will graduate from the Sidwell Friends school in Washington this year. In October, Obama told a crowd in Des Moines, Iowa, some of the advice he had given his daughter on her college search.

“One piece of advice that I’ve given her is not to stress too much about having to get into one particular college,” he said. “Just because it’s not some name-brand, famous, fancy school doesn’t mean that you’re not going to get a great education there.”

Obama has also spoken about what it's like to see his daughters grow up, telling GQ in November that even though it's been difficult to see the way they don't have time for him anymore and saying they're growing into people who are "smarter and cooler" than he is.

I can understand why they asked him, but he's right. He should enjoy it on his own, and Malia should not have that standing out sort of thing this would create - just be another grad with her parents there to do nothing but see her graduate.
