I don't get it.

I love this "kid" (he's in his thirties, now). I was there when he was born. His whole life has been one long and painful struggle with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. A couple years ago he decided that his life just wasn't difficult enough, so he "chose" to be gay; this came to his parents' knowledge just a few months before he lost his mom to cancer.

His dad, my younger brother, is the only family member to fight him on this; he and his late wife even tried to force that 'reparative therapy' on him. The "christian" college he was attending almost contributed to his demise when they didn't want to take him to the ER when he was so sick (because he's one of those ); and while he was in the hospital recuperating from emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix, they called to tell him he's permanently suspended; after he got home, they called again to tell him that his mother died because of his gay sin.

Anyway, he and I have stayed in touch, me playing the part of loving and supportive aunt. It's a bit tricky, since I'm in Colorado and he's in South Carolina. With everything that's happened in that state in recent months, I've tried to let him know that I'm still here for him. It's hard because my finances require that I don't make a lot of phone calls. So I was delighted to see a friend request from him on facebook. I sent him an email explaining that I went on facebook as an admin for our local Dems, and that he'd have to wade through piles of political stuff. He repeated the request, so I added him.

This morning I saw the first posts from him on my wall. And they're all shared from severely rightwing sites, Obama is an evil Muslim, Obamacare kills more than guns do, etc. I don't get it. I just don't.

I still love him. But criminy. .....sigh.....

It's worth the effort. He's being brainwashed and you care about him. Remind him that conservatives don't believe health care is a right in America, and Obama's decision to expand health care unleashed crazy bashing and demonizing.

before anything, speak to him in live person. as a du poster on fb - posting progressive links you may have been targeted. also, i recommend you make settings of your friend lists and personal info/email to be seen only by you (lock icon). and of course, change your password. if he is posting these things directly on your name page other than them coming in on your home page feed, this may be a sign that your name page has been hacked.

bless you for being there for him.
