"WASHINGTON Environmentalists praised wildlife protections included in thesweeping Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal announced Monday, calling them groundbreaking.
They said the pact would strengthen international environmental enforcement agreements and could go a long way toward diminishing the illegal trade in certain plants and animals.
Those measures represent a major breakthrough on one of the most divisive issues in the contentious trade negotiations, as well as a significant victory for the Obama administration, which had pushed for strong environmental provisions against the objections of most other countries involved in the 12-nation deal.
"The provisions in the Trans-Pacific Partnership go beyond what we have seen in other trade agreements, said David McCauley, senior vice president for policy and government affairs at the World Wildlife Fund, which was among several advocacy groups that had worked closely with the administration on the final language. We see this as a very big deal.

(1,754 posts)Officials from Oceana, the Humane Society, the World Wildlife Fund and World Animal Protection all told HuffPost they had not endorsed the TPP pact and are waiting to see the final agreement before rendering a verdict, although the White House quoted all of these groups praising elements of it.

(14,255 posts)since not a word of the TPP can be changed now, I guess increasing the cost of medicine worldwide is quite alright, because there are wildlife protections, right? I sincerely doubt that the wildlife protections will be vigorously upheld, but the cost of medicine will continue to climb.
Well played, TPP!

(15,720 posts)US pharma companies didn't get the 12-year embargo on generic drugs they originally wanted; the final agreement includes a hybrid embargo of 5-8 years, per the wires:

I appreciate all good news coming out of this contentious bill. There will be more I feel sure.

(26,345 posts)ODS seems to be very strong when it comes to the TPP. The knee-jerk opposition before the terms were worked out is pretty telling. A very good example from the article in your link:
Environmentalists had criticized the Obama administration after a draft of the environmental chapter of the trade agreement, made public in January 2014, appeared to signal that the United States was retreating on a variety of environmental measures in order to advance a trade deal that has been a top priority for President Obama.

But the final deal includes that requirement, along with new enforcement methods. It also places new limits on wildlife trafficking and subsidies for illegal fishing. {emphasis mine}

(16,104 posts)"I'm also confident that the case to be made for why this is good for America is sufficiently strong, that ultimately we're going to get this done," Obama said after a meeting with the business leaders at the U.S. Agriculture Department.
The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership will eliminate or reduce foreign tariffs on some 18,000 products, notably agriculture exports, Obama said. For example, he said, Japan slaps a 38% tax on American beef, and Malaysia has a 30% tax on U.S. auto parts.
Preparing to sell the deal in the months ahead, Obama said he and his aides "are going to be talking not just to members of Congress, but the American public and various constituencies, and governors, and mayors who are represented here about why this is good for their communities."
While Obama said, "I suspect that there will be some misinformation that is propagated around this, as there usually is in these debates," he predicted the agreement will ultimately be ratified.
"It will be an enormous achievement for us to be able to make sure that 40% of the worlds economy is operating under rules that dont hurt us," Obama said.
