Among the more than 50 million annual tourists in New York City, one frequent visitor stands out: President Barack Obama.

On Thursday, Mr. Obama made his third trip to the city in two months, to attend a private Democratic National Committee fundraiser on the Upper West Side.

In June, the president traveled to Manhattan to headline the DNC's LGBT Leadership Council gala at Gotham Hall. And in May, Mr. Obama took a two-day trip to the city, attending fundraising events and speaking at the dedication of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

His visits aren't all business.

Fortunate enough to live there 1969-70. My ex and I were childless then and had a tiny 'garden' studio but it didn't matter. Weeknights we didn't get home before 11 pm, and weekends sometimes we just didn't get home at all. In those 2 years we saw more of the city than many lifetime residents ever did. But we knew we wouldn't always be there either, so we wanted to make the most of our stay. Those are still some of the best memories of my life. God bless the USO, too, and the free Broadway tickets for servicemen. He was an officer so rightfully we had to wait until almost showtime before any leftover tickets were available to us. But if you were standing right there at 7:30 and really hustled, you could make it to almost any theater before curtain time.
