Barack Obama

I was looking forward to the State of the Union Address! I made sure that I would not be working. I requested that evening off.
I have to say that I was not disappointed! What an amazing speech. It was not just words. It was about action. Our steady thoughtful President did not disappoint!
"Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better. But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. Upward mobility has stalled. The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by let alone get ahead. And too many still arent working at all.
Our job is to reverse these trends. It wont happen right away, and we wont agree on everything. But what I offer tonight is a set of concrete, practical proposals to speed up growth, strengthen the middle class, and build new ladders of opportunity into the middle class. Some require Congressional action, and Im eager to work with all of you. But America does not stand still and neither will I So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, thats what Im going to do."
Yet after the speech, here on DU. Wow! The hate broke the damn that leaked and spewed vitriol. Is this who we are and what we have become? No, I do not believe that, yet I cried last night. I stayed up and fought some of the unrelenting hate that was directed at this President.
SFC Cory Remsburg was no prop. If you believe that your heart and soul are bleak and blank. This young man served this country. Selflessly and honestly. He had his eyes wide open. You do him and his service an injustice when you call him a prop. He is a proud man and was honored as such at the SOTU. A standing ovation for his service.
Please do not take away his dignity. Your beliefs may not be his, yet give him his right to stand proud. I do believe that he deserves that.
In the end, I wish these wars will never again happen. Diplomacy is what we need to strive for. This President is striving to make this happen.
" We have to remain vigilant. But I strongly believe our leadership and our security cannot depend on our military alone. As Commander-in-Chief, I have used force when needed to protect the American people, and I will never hesitate to do so as long as I hold this office. But I will not send our troops into harms way unless its truly necessary; nor will I allow our sons and daughters to be mired in open-ended conflicts. We must fight the battles that need to be fought, not those that terrorists prefer from us large-scale deployments that drain our strength and may ultimately feed extremism.
So, even as we aggressively pursue terrorist networks through more targeted efforts and by building the capacity of our foreign partners America must move off a permanent war footing. Thats why Ive imposed prudent limits on the use of drones for we will not be safer if people abroad believe we strike within their countries without regard for the consequence. Thats why, working with this Congress, I will reform our surveillance programs because the vital work of our intelligence community depends on public confidence, here and abroad, that the privacy of ordinary people is not being violated. And with the Afghan war ending, this needs to be the year Congress lifts the remaining restrictions on detainee transfers and we close the prison at Guantanamo Bay because we counter terrorism not just through intelligence and military action, but by remaining true to our Constitutional ideals, and setting an example for the rest of the world.
You see, in a world of complex threats, our security and leadership depends on all elements of our power including strong and principled diplomacy. American diplomacy has rallied more than fifty countries to prevent nuclear materials from falling into the wrong hands, and allowed us to reduce our own reliance on Cold War stockpiles. American diplomacy, backed by the threat of force, is why Syrias chemical weapons are being eliminated, and we will continue to work with the international community to usher in the future the Syrian people deserve a future free of dictatorship, terror and fear. As we speak, American diplomacy is supporting Israelis and Palestinians as they engage in difficult but necessary talks to end the conflict there; to achieve dignity and an independent state for Palestinians, and lasting peace and security for the State of Israel a Jewish state that knows America will always be at their side."

I should have stood back and not engaged, I agree who needs it.
Yet it hurt ellen, it hurt me.

(136,111 posts)It hurt me that people ignored Wes Clark when he ran. Many here, I heard, were hostile. I wasn't a DUer at the time.
Democrats/Progressives have problems thinking about/addressing military matters and members of the military, resulting in foolish and thoughtless actions.

(305,440 posts)by so much action already taken, she. President Obama and our country have been subjected to unheard obstruction and yet he and his Admin have opened up so many avenues of Progress for us! It's their incredible determination to take Action regardless of the spitefulness of the US House of Reps.
We Have to Do THIS>>>>>>> We Have to Help him OUT!
No one knows what it's like to be this President. So easy to take cheap pot shots behind the safety of the computer. The "prop" pushers tried to take away Sgt Cory Remsburg's dignity but they couldn't do it, she.. too many cleared-headed people came to support him and this President. Thank you for all you do to maintain the integrity of a reality based community.
We've all cheered the "Diplomacy" that has been coming from SOS Kerry, VP Biden, and PBO with Iran and
Hassan Rouhani. We're so fortunate that Iran has a leader who is willing to negotiate. The republicons and the warmongering dems want nothing to do with it but Obama has said he will Veto their bill for more sanctions..

Why you want war, fools!
I saw a poll that 76% ..
snip//
"The media loves to repeat the theme that Americans hate politicians, including President Obama. So they buried the news that people watching President Obama's State of the Union address had an overwhelmingly positive response. A CNN instant poll showed that 76% of viewers liked the speech, but their article covering that fact was mostly negative to match the negative media narrative. And that's the supposedly "mainstream" media, not even the ridiculously anti-Obama right-wingers such as Fox News and talk radio."

(43,518 posts)Full of ideas and practical plans for a successful path forward. The finish was as inspiring as Sgt Remsburg, that fine and brave young man.
The hate and vitriol I've read on this board these last days shouldn't surprise me but the intensity of it did. I salute you, ProSense, and the others who had the stamina to wade in and wage the fight with common sense and dignity.
It can't be easy to deal with such irrational hatred. I understand disagreement, I just don't get the bitter hatred so-called Democrats seem to have for this President.

(82,383 posts)Read the parts quoted above about the wars and President Obama agrees with them basically. He's saying what they want. Permanent war footing was the preferred way, under Rs and Ds.

(22,541 posts)The hate runs freely and has seeped into everything. I stopped caring what they thought about President Obama long ago. It's a lost cause. What does concern me is that this used to be a community. People liked each other, cared about each other. Now, if you're a Dem who happens to support the president, the majority in the forums hate you, ridicule you, openly target you, and bully you.
WND could have written some of the bullshit that's been posted here about the SOTU. Or even that guy on all the Ancient Aliens shows with the scary big hair. I responded to a couple of the posts. Now I wish I hadn't. I mean, I wouldn't respond to anything on Free Republic. What's the use, right? Same principle.

(87,557 posts)I did see a few of your posts.
I know what you mean, sad isn't it. When you see the likes of faux news echoing some of DU's views. Funny, I don't see this much hatred, in the real world. Oh I know it is indeed out there. Yet I don't feel bludgeoned by it as I do here. To support this President we are indeed bullied. For gawds sake, we need our own protected group on DU to escape this and celebrate this President's accomplishments!

(22,541 posts)Just scared to open my mouth most days. The SOTU stuff did piss me off enough to speak up. But I should stop. It's not good for my health or my life.
Just know I'm usually here, only not talking.
