Beyonce performs at White House for Michelle Obama's 50th birthdayThere was a not-so-super-secret dance party going on at the most recognizable mansion in the nations capital Saturday night.
A birthday party to celebrate Michelle Obama's 50th birthday took place at the White House, and it was studded with stars, including Magic Johnson, Stevie Wonder and Gayle King. Guests were treated to performances by Beyoncé and John Legend.
TODAY's own Al Roker stopped by to chat with NBC's Kristen Welker on his way to the party, saying he was ready to dance. "I'm hoping it's old school!" he said.
The actor Samuel L. Jackson was also in attendance, and said, "I am looking forward to saying happy birthday to her, being able to celebrate this great milestone in her life."
Before the bash, its planner-in-chief, President Obama, kept details under extremely tight wraps, revealing very little about the event or even what he planned to give his wife.

Michelle Obama on her 50th birthday: My message to women is be healthy
BY LESLEY CLARK
McClatchy Washington BureauJanuary 15, 2014
First Lady Michelle Obama said she's yet to peak -- even as she celebrates her 50th birthday at the White House this week.
"I'm first lady of the United States of America -- that's pretty high up," Obama said in a birthday-themed interview with People magazine. "But I've always felt like my life is ever-evolving."
The article -- which includes a conversation on her famous arms, plastic surgery -- she doesn't imagine she'll go under the knife or use Botox or fillers, but hasn't ruled it out -- and menopause - a topic she said she and her girlfriends have discussed as they move into their 50s and 60s - is featured in the Jan. 27 issue of People, which hits newsstands nationwide on Friday -- Obama's birthday.
In it, Obama says there's a number of older women who serve as role models for her, including Cicely Tyson, whom she said she saw on Broadway recently.
"She is in her 80s and did a two-hour play with stamina and passion," Obama told People. "I told her, 'I want to be you when I grow up!' "

Today, First Lady Michelle Obama joined 2,000 American military children and American and British students at Lets Move! London, an event held to spread the spirit of the Olympic Games in London. The First Lady is leading the U.S. Delegation to the Summer Games and Lets Move! London was designed to turn the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games into action by encouraging kids to get moving.
Thats what Let's Move is all about. Its about helping kids like you live happier, healthier lives, Mrs. Obama told the crowd gathered at the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in London. And thats really why we brought you all here today
because we want you to see that there all kinds of ways that you can stay active and have fun doing it. You don't have to be an Olympian. You don't have to join a team. But there are so many ways that you can have fun and keep yourselves moving.

Michelle Obamas Lets Move report says walking and biking key to healthier kids
Earlier this month, we highlighted two reports on the integral link between health and transportation. First Lady Michelle Obamas recent Lets Move report on childhood obesity goes one step further endorsing a new surface transportation bill that encourages more walking and biking.
Noting the pivotal impact transportation options and the built environment have on health and physical activity, Transportation for America encouraged First Lady Obama to include the built environment in the final product. We are gratified that the task force did just that.
The full White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity report contains five components: Early Childhood; Empowering Parents and Caregivers; Healthy Food in Schools; Access to Healthy, Affordable Food; and Increasing Physical Activity. Our interest is primarily in the last section, which has a section on the built environment. According to the report:
How communities are designed and function can promoteor inhibitphysical activity for children and adults. The built environment consists of all man-made structures, including transportation infrastructure, schools, office buildings, housing, and parks. Childrens ability to be physically active in their community depends on whether the community is safe and walkable, with good sidewalks and reasonable distances between destinations.

She is one kick ass First Lady.
You did not respond why you are so disappointed in her. Why is that so very sad? Why does it not do her position justice?
Really? Why, because she was honored at her birthday? That she became 50? Or that Beyonce sang a tribute to her....Why?

Bet they all had so much fun! thanks she for giving us the scoop~
"Although White House staffers were extraordinarily tight-lipped about party details, President Obama did reveal one birthday gift he gave his wife. Earlier this month, the first lady stayed an extra week in Hawaii after the family left their 15-day island vacation to return home.
As the party began to wind down Saturday, musician Smokey Robinson said, "We were here for the first lady's birthday and that was the highlight, and the president gave a wonderful, wonderful speech about her, and then Beyoncé performed and wow."
Yes! thanks for Beyoncé's "At Last"
