Northeastern BOGers Take Care!

US north-east braces for first major snow storm of 2014

The US north-east is bracing for a severe storm that is expected to cause havoc with transport schedules

Residents of the north-eastern US have been warned to stay indoors, as the region braces for a storm expected to dump up to 14in (35cm) of snow.

Nearly 2,000 flights have been grounded nationwide as heavy snow fell from Illinois to Michigan in the US Midwest.

New York and New England are expected to see blizzard conditions, with wind gusts of up to 45mph (72 km/h)...

Several inches of snow have already fallen in the US north-east, but the strongest part of the storm is expected on Thursday evening into Friday morning.

And another report:

Snowpocalypse 2014: Hercules claims first victim as man is crushed to death by 100ft salt pile and meteorologists warn it will get so cold exposed skin will freeze in fifteen minutes

Cities from New York to Washington, D.C. to Boston are being hit by up to 22 inches of snow

Warnings plummeting temperatures and wind chills below zero could freeze exposed skin within 15 minutes

In New York, Long Island Expressway, I-87 South and I-84 were closed at midnight until 5am Friday

Man died outside Philadelphia when 100ft pile of salt fell on him as he prepared it for gritters

Many more details and pix at the link:

Nothing to complain about in the Pacific Northwest. Just sending some warm thoughts to you all:

just getting miserable. The winter gales had taken out of lot of lines. I did what most people did, hit the shopping strip stores and stayed warm in my vehicle and the stores.

Since it was right before Xmas, it was somewhat enjoyable. Sort of one mass party of people who would have been home at night otherwise. I had to charge up my cellphone in the vehicle, and was I ever glad when the power came back on.

I live in a place now where the power is restored very quickly and most of it is underground. Still, things happen.

Best wishes to you.

underground utilities and I guess because this little bump in the road town is the county seat, we have our own power plant. County hospital too. If power goes off, it's never for very long, and I've made sure my heat doesn't rely on electric ignition.

But I've been hearing on the news that much of the country's experiencing the harshest winter in 20-30 years, some places even the last 50 years - and some of those records are expected to fall. So even though the exit pipe on my washing machine presently has an ice plug in the trap, things could be a lot worse. Wish me luck getting it flowing again, though, or I'll be out of clean clothes before long. My friend down the street said bring a load down to her house if I need to, although of course I prefer to do it at home.

Well, best of everything to everyone now and later. At the moment I have to shovel a path to the house so the deliveryman can bring in my new kitchen range today. I'll keep telling myself it's worth it.

Hard to know how much is "blowing" snow and how much is "falling" stuff....but it's gonna have to be shovelled eventually.

UGH! Times like this I wish I was a snowbird...or had a trip planned. This would have been the storm to miss!

They are terriers and they are wearing their fuzzy "vests" (thick harnesses that cover their chests and neck). I think I will actually break out the dog "winter clothing" tomorrow--they have "parkas" that we use on trips to Northern Maine, but it's never been so cold down this way that we've bothered with them down here. They've got stubby legs and the snow is deeper than they are--I have to shovel to clear the little shits (hee hee) a path!

Thanks for that fire! I feel better already. I have some heat on, but I am still cold!

Snowed last night and all day here. Shoveled twice, yet not much accumulation. The rest is suppose to come tonight. I just looked we are at 0% right now.

I had two pairs of gloves on and still had to run my hands under warm water when I came in.

Thank you... for caring~

The chows loved this kind of weather, but the 2 smaller dogs, a smooth coat JRT and a pom/mini beagle cross, rush out and back in within minutes! Every hour or so. I don't think they have to pee that much, but they run around the house a couple times to burn off excess energy. Although I had to shovel a path to the porch for my stove delivery this afternoon, I don't go out in these temps any oftener or longer than necessary.

This is grilled cheese and tomato soup lunch weather!

Fair's fair, I guess. I ate all the tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich.

Hope your mom's ok. Late this afternoon I drove a neighbor friend (who's even older than I) to grocery shop since she doesn't need to be driving at all, really; especially not in the snow. We've got another storm headed our way. I don't have a car so I'm happy enough to drive for her. We sort of fit together.

I went out to start my car this morning, I didn't think it would be too much snow. All I could see out of my frosty door was my first couple of steps and they were clear. Imagine my surprise when I had to slog through at least 6 more inches of snow. I had to go across a large parking area to the far side of my landlords house. I had only worn my short boots!

However my car started and I moved it closer to my house to warm, then had to change out of my wet pants and boots.

It's only 8 degrees right now....very cold tonight. Glad to be home.

I am warming up in front of your fire. Thanks freshwest.

My car is now at the bottom of my stairs....so no slogging tomorrow. Then I can park at the garage at work. My sweet neighbor downstairs was shoveling part of my walkway this morning. I only had to do the stairs.

When I came home, he had also cleared what the plow had pushed back in. Sweet!

I am toasty now. Thanks freshwest~

I feel rich! Always wanted to restore my 1920 gas range - beautiful thing - but it would've cost more than the new Frigidaire to make safely operational. So now I have one stunning plant stand, cornflower yellow and dark green with brass accents. Looks good on my front porch but it will look even better covered with potted plants this spring. I enclosed the porch with 1" white lattice, so nobody else has to look at it if they don't want to. I like the privacy and the warm weather breezes.

My dad loved 1930s stuff. This picture of our gas range doesn't have all that the one he found, because it also had a long flourescent light in the back, built in. We turned it on before going to bed and it lit the kitchen for those late night snacks.

It had a built-in crockpot on the back left side, a griddle in the middle, the two drawers on the bottom, but the one on the right was a broiler drawer. The oven was on the right, with a warming oven (and the crockpot) on the left.

It was all chrome on the top, and had a few more chrome accents than the picture does. It had 6 standing pilot lights on all the time. Natural gas was cheap back then.

I remember him getting up at night to cook snacks that my step-mother didn't think were fit to eat, so she never made them.

Like a pot of pinto beans and some yellow corn bread (no sugar) or some sauerkraut and polish sausage. He cooked the beans and the sauerkraut with a Mirror steamer that scared me half to death.

He also taught me to baste an egg and to make 'S.O.S.' as he called it, that strange entree of dried beef slices, toast and a white sauce. They gave it to them in the service in WW2.

Did they set it up for you?

I'm so glad you got an upgrade, it will be so much easier and I bet it will warm the house, too.

Fri Jan 3, 2014, 08:11 PM

No, this new one is electric because that's what was here before. Otherwise I'd have been out a huge expense to route another propane line. But it's okay, and it's a big one; looks good for a modern piece. Nothing's as pretty as the earlier designs, though. If money were no object, I'd buy out Elmira Stove Works in Canada - they make very expensive reproductions of antique appliances, including chromed-out pot belly stoves and kitchen stoves, refrigerators, you name it - for almost what my house cost.

Since I no longer cook for a lot of people, it makes no practical sense to have spent anything on a new stove, but for some reason I was just tired of the hot plate and toaster oven. This makes me feel more 'settled' somehow. Go figure.
