Christmas is over on the East Coast.
The clock has struck twelve. It's done.
Yet, the true meaning of Christmas is not the paper that was torn or the ribbons that were discarded. That is just pretty packaging, superficial at best.
What does it really mean to us? This day brought me sweet joy, laughter and a loving bond with family and friends. Yet Christmas is not a one day holiday. It does not end at the stroke of midnight.
The true depth of the spirit of Christmas should remain with us throughout the year. It is about laughter and giving. It is about our kindred spirits that not only feel the pain when others are suffering, they reach down and help them stand tall.
There is no need for packaging when you have the real thing standing in front of you. Simple roots are not a bad thing. A community organizer that walks tirelessly through neighborhoods to help right the wrongs. Walking miles in thread bear shoes to bring hope to so many that are in need, to those that believed they were forgotten. Why? It is because he believes that it is the right thing to do. He believes in us. Our President believes in us, our, spirit and resilience. He has given us sunlight when we have only known shadows. He reached down and pulled us up.
The future? Well I believe it has become brighter. Yes, I know not quickly, not easily. However it grows brighter by the day. Our colors grow stronger and bolder and they will indeed continue to change and mold our behaviors. The colors will meld together, as on an artist's palate and together we will stand as one. We will be strong.
The spirit of Christmas did not end today, it is only the beginning.
Peace to you all.

(4,309 posts)We have a lot of work to do but, yes, this is a beginning. So refreshing to have have a President with peace and equality as priorities.

(53,661 posts)Did you and the pups enjoy the day inside by the fire (whatever it was)?
At least the snow went away here but I am still very busy on my health.
And look forward to the coming year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you Irish!!

(6,151 posts)The dogs have been able to play outdoors a lot today, since it got up to a freaky 60 degrees. I have a good friend down the street who owns a car but no longer feels comfortable driving out of town. So today she wanted to go to an even smaller town nearby where she grew up; they have an excellent farmer's market/general store there, and a little cafe. You can buy things there which are not available in our bigger tiny town. I dug her car out of the snow for her and played chauffer, but I love it because I miss driving and I do like shopping in her hometown.
One of the treasures I came home with was 10 lbs of good peanut butter for barely over $15; it would've cost at least $24 here. I like the old fashioned general stores anyway. Oh, I forgot to mention the excellent dry goods department on the east side of the building. There's a bigger one in another town, but it's twice as far away. It will be the last trip we can make for the winter. Tomorrow will be nice too, so I plan to ride my bike around town on a few more errands, then shed it for the season. Sunday will be back to 17 degrees, with overnight lows well below zero again. 15 below's about the worst it usually gets, although I remember once or twice 20 below. That's nothing for upstate Maine, though. Or it didn't used to be.
