President Obama: 'I've Got 3 Opinionated, Strong, Tall Women'

Sitting down for their annual interview with PEOPLE, President and Mrs. Obama reflect on the year’s difficulties, both in the political arena and the smaller challenges he encounters at home.

“I’ve got three opinionated, strong, tall women,” says President Obama. “If they get together, they can have fun about my ears or being too loud, or how I dress.”

…. The Obamas reveal that daughters Sasha, 12, and Malia, 15, weigh in on Mom’s fashion choices and have tutored Dad in using Instagram and Vine. And, like any kids, they are occasionally embarrassed by their parents.

“Malia had friends over, and there was a question about whether she was going to even introduce them [to her dad], because sometimes he gets a little formal, asking them about school and interests,” the First Lady tells PEOPLE. “She says, ‘I don’t know if my friends can handle that.’” Then she turns to her husband and says, “But she said that you actually did quite well.”

“I acquitted myself well,” notes the President. “I did not embarrass her.”

I have a sardonic and witty interaction that people find humorous when they first are exposed to it.

My daughters appreciation has not however stood the test of time.

When I enter into my shtick they will look away and with tremendous self control attempt (but fail) not to smile a little before they say "Dad stop it".

When I do it in the presence of their husbands or friends I can get quite a good response going but my daughters are left to telling their friends "Please don't laugh it only encourages him". Exhortations are usually accompanied with a severe pinch.

I do embarrass them, I thought that's what fathers were for.

Up until last year my daughters friends told her, "Your Dad is so quiet. You can tell he's thinking; but you can't tell WHAT he's thinking. And he never smiles.""

Mission Accomplished! My job was to be Dad ... not anyone's friend.

Now that she and her friends are 18+, we have a completely different relationship. Now they tell her, "Wow ... I knew your Mom was cool; but your Dad is really cool and kind of funny."

don't you?

That has to be one of the best pictures ever. Sweet story to go with it. I don't exactly favor People magazine, but that's one issue I'll have to buy. If I can find one in this tiny town. (The only folks who call us the 'big town' are those from places that have a maximum population down to 6 or 7. A more typical count hovers around 200/300, and those are few and far between.)

edit: Sorry I forgot to mention earlier: Some men would be whining when they said they had 3 opinionated, strong, tall women. But it takes a real man to say that with sincere admiration.
