Today in Washington, DC! Leading Congressional representatives and champions in support of immigration reform, minutes before being arrested in a civil disobedience action. "Today I came to sacrifice my own freedom, for the benefit of the freedom of those who have none. Our immigration policy is broken and need to correct it right now,"said Gutierrez shortly before his arrest" (Translated by Bing)
If Democrats claim they have the votes to pass immigration reform, let's DEMAND they start a DISCHARGE PETITION for their bill before the end of October to show how serious they are. No more excuses.

Muchas Gracias for this muy importante issue in our country!
Do the recons/baggers not want Immigration Reform for the same reason they're fighting so desperately against Obamacare?
They don't want anything that will benefit this country, unless you are of the 1%.
Doesn't matter, the Pukes are going down and we damn sure are going to win.
Go Democrats~2014 and Beyond.

(305,445 posts)White House press secretary Jay Carney released a statement on Tuesday urging House Republicans to end the government shutdown and take up immigration reform.
More than 100 days ago, the Senate passed a strong bipartisan immigration reform bill that would reduce the deficit by over $800 billion and create jobs, Carney said. House Democrats introduced a similar bill last week. It is time for House Republicans to put politics aside and join Democrats to fix our broken immigration system and make the economy stronger.
The statement came after thousands rallied on the National Mall in support of immigration reform. Capitol Police arrested an estimated 200 protesters, including eight Democratic lawmakers over the demonstration.
The enthusiastic demonstration of support for immigration reform this week has proven to Congress that the broad coalition behind commonsense solutions to our nations broken immigration laws is as strong as it has ever been, Carney continued.

(87,570 posts)John Lewis first visited the White House and President John Kennedy in 1963 as a 23-year-old son of sharecroppers intent on changing the world.
He would go on to help do just that at sit-ins in Nashville, at bus stops in Rock Hill, S.C. and on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama, when he was nearly beaten to death by police on a fateful, hate-filled day that changed the course of the civil rights movement and later became known as Bloody Sunday.
Nearly 50 years later, Lewis now Rep. Lewis of Atlanta was back at the White House on Tuesday as recipient of the presidential Medal of Freedom.
When parents teach their children what is meant by courage, the story of John Lewis will come to mind, President Barack Obama said in presenting Lewis with the nations highest civilian honor for his work as a civil rights leader who promoted nonviolent protests.
