"It's basically: 30 people in one half of one branch of the three branches of government are shutting down the government. Okay, that's how they want to play? Okay. That's fine if everybody comes to their senses before we actually destroy the economy and lose credit, full faith and credit, as they like to say. That's a big deal."
"So my sense is, cooler heads will prevail in the debt-ceiling crisis. I don't think too much will happen."
"Look, sequestration is a big deal. People like to brush it off and say nothing happened, but an awful lot of kids aren't being fed, and a lot of stuff happens that just gets swept under the rug."
"Shutting down the government is not how you make government work. And anybody who thinks we don't need it is an idiot."

(65,026 posts)It's really quite good, altho if it weren't for Clooney I wouldn't bother, because space stuff just doesn't interest me that much. Also, Sandra Bullock is not my favorite actress.
Clooney is terrific, as usual, but he only has one scene where he isn't wearing a space helmet. But it doesn't matter because he is just so damn charming and fun in it and his voice carries a lot of his charm. I won't give away any details of the story in case you'll be seeing it.
The movie I really want to see later this year is "Monuments Men," which he directed and stars in. It's a true story of the art scholars, curators, museum directors who were inducted into the army during WW2 and planned the saving of Europe's art from both the Germans and from the war's destruction. I've read several books that chronicle this story and it's just wonderful. So you get great art and George Clooney (Matt Damon, too, who I adore) and a helluva story. It'll be in theaters in December and I can't wait!

Obama on Clooney.. From August 19, 2012
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight that will air Monday, President Obama discussed his friendship with George Clooney, calling the actor a "wonderful guy."
"The truth is we got to know each other because of a substantive issue," Obama said. "He is a terrific advocate on behalf of the people of Darfur, and to the people of Sudan who've been brutalized for a long time. And so when I was a senator -- this was well before I was president -- that was an issue that I was working together on a bipartisan basis, and George, who had traveled there, done documentaries there, and was very well-informed, came to testify in Congress. And so we got to know each other, and he is a good man, and a good friend."
While the president praised the actor's humanitarian efforts, he also noted the effect Clooney's star power has on members of his White House staff.
"I will say that the couple of times he's come to the White House, I notice that the staff suddenly is circling around my office," he said. "They've got memos they need to make sure I see right away."
Michelle Obama also weighed in on her husband's celebrity pal, joking that she thinks it's a "conspiracy" that she's never around when Clooney comes to town.

(9,214 posts)It was not the tea party, it was the Republican party. If it was the tea party, Boehner could call for a vote tomorrow, he doesn't call for a vote so it is the Republicans that shut the government down. Majority rules even within a political party, it wasn't 30 people that shut down the government, it was the entire Republican party.
Don't give the Republicans an out, they want to be able to say "it wasn't me, it was them", we can't let them do that.
The tea party was created to move the Republican agenda faster and it is working.
