"Not Again".. President Obama Speaks at Memorial for Victims of Navy Yard Shooting

Text of Remarks..

“Once more we come together to mourn the lives of beauty and to comfort the wonderful families who cherished them. Once more we pay tribute to all who rushed towards the danger, who risked their lives so others might live. Once more our hearts are broken. Once more we ask why….

….. On Monday morning, these 12 men and women woke up like they did every day. They left home and they headed off to work. Gerald Read’s wife Cathy said, “See you tonight for dinner.” And John Johnson looked at his wife Judy and said what he always said whenever they parted, “Goodbye beautiful. I love you so much”…..

….. What Robert Kennedy understood, what Dr. King understood, what all our great leaders have always understood, is that wisdom does not come from tragedy alone or from some sense of resignation in the fallibility of man. Wisdom comes through the recognition that tragedies such as this are not inevitable, and that we possess the ability to act and to change, and to spare others the pain that drops upon our hearts. So in our grief, let us seek that grace. Let us find that wisdom. And in doing so, let us truly honor these 12 American patriots.”

Yet this should not be one of the hardest ones.

The second amendment has been "rewritten", if you will, to suit the needs of the NRA. A well regulated militia my ass. They are gun nuts pure and simple. I don't care if a person owns a rifle for hunting. The fire power that individuals are amassing is just plain nuts.

This is even more sad, as it could have been easily avoided. My heart is so heavy for all the victim's loved ones.

"WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Sunday memorialized the victims of the Washington Navy Yard shooting by calling for a transformation in the nation's gun laws to address an epidemic of gun violence, saying, "There's nothing inevitable about it."

Reprising his role of the nation's consoler in chief after yet another mass shooting, Obama said Americans should honor the victims of last Monday's shooting by insisting on a change in gun laws. "It ought to obsess us," Obama said.

"Sometimes I fear there is a creeping resignation that these tragedies are just somehow the way it is, that this is somehow the new normal. We cannot accept this," Obama said."

but what laws are we to push for? Common shotgun. Background check passed. I heard he attempted to purchase a pistol but current law prevented that as he was out of state. I guess you could prevent all sales to out of state residents.

there and if they could be related to gun purchases - he called the cops once saying people were following him. But the cops had no reason to arrest him for that and apparently no cause to follow up and make sure he sought mental health treatment.

It would create the kind of database that would make the emoprogs scream "totalitarianism."

Thank you for posting these pics of all the ways we mourn and honor our loved ones who are just gone.. from senseless gun violence.

And, this reminds me of those in Boston, too.. more unfathomable violence that left so much sadness in its wake.

I don't know if I will be able to handle some of the reaction at DU. There was a lot of shit tossed our way.
It's about to start again.

Dear Boston~

I posted it again. it works for me, yet that doesn't mean that it will work for you.

...wanted stricter gun laws - and STILL DID NOT GET stricter gun laws, then I'm sorry but . . .

It's evident given this situation that change MUST come from CONGRESS and that change will ONLY come when the NRA is decoupled from that governing body - no influence. No money. No lobbying. Nothing. THAT is where the change has to happen. The NRA must be made impotent to be able to foist its minority agenda upon the majority of Americans, when the majority of Americans want something completely different.

THAT. IS. NOT. DEMOCRACY.

THAT. IS. NOT. REPRESENTATIVE. GOVERNMENT.

We can’t accept this. As Americans bound in grief and love, we must insist here today there’s nothing normal about innocent men and women being gunned down where they work. There’s nothing normal about our children being gunned down in our classrooms. There’s nothing normal about children dying in our streets from stray bullets.
