I love President Obama, still. Just saw part of the interview on Leno.
He is so cool because he does what he thinks is right.

"Russia slips back into Cold War mentality, Obama tells Leno"

"By opening its doors to American fugitive Edward Snowden and cracking down on gay rights, Russian President Vladimir Putin is slipping into a cold war mentality, underlying the challenges that are plaguing U.S.-Russian relations, President Obama said late Tuesday in a wide ranging interview in Los Angeles on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.
Sitting side-by-side in the studio with Leno, the president spoke about everything from the Affordable Care Act and NSA surveillance to the economy, his relationship with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the death of Trayvon Martin.
The president also spoke about the latest terror threats that have led to embassy closures in the Middle East and the evacuation of some U.S. personnel from Yemen, But Russia and surveillance loomed largest over the conversation as the president weaved back and forth between his concerns about the upcoming Olympic winter games in Sochi, and Putins decision to grant temporary asylum to Snowden, the former CIA officer and NSA leaker."

That last paragraph is exactly what I believe to be true. I trust PBO to do that. It's that simple.

When this recent nasty little contretemps developed in Moscow, and a number of Americans at DU and elsewhere started to say we should boycott, I thought maybe we should look at the situation a bit differently.
I went looking for a short clip of Jesse Owens running away with the gold, because it was so iconic in my childhood: emblematic of US vs Nazi values, part of our post-WWII progressive optimism, and I do mean progressive. The reality of race in the US was more complicated than that by far, but that clip and its commentary, wherever it has gone, had a part in forming my consciousness and that of many others.
We know we have some gay and lesbian athletes. I would say: Go, compete, win. This is your moment.

In 1936 the US sent 18 African-American Olympic athletes to Germany.
10 of those team members won 14 Olympic medals, including 8 gold medals.

BTW, I tend to rec your threads when I see them.
