US President Barack Obama delivers a speech at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Obama warned that Africa could only fulfill its rising potential with leaders who serve their people, not tyrants who enrich themselves.
Later, in a speech at Cape Town University, Obama decried "thugs and warlords" who hold back the promise in Africa.
In a strident call for democratic change and good governance, Obama used the political legacy of Mandela and South Africa's emergence from grim years of racist apartheid rule as proof that freedom will ultimately prevail.
"History shows us that progress is only possible where governments exist to serve their people and not the other way around," said Obama, drawing loud and prolonged cheers from his audience of more than 1,000 people.

(53,661 posts)The light of love in his eyes always, so much so that I called him an angel to my friends. Always kind and forgiving to everyone.
He loves America and all its people, and had moved her over ten years ago and voted Democratic when he got the right to vote. The look on his face when Obama was elected twice was priceless. An epiphany for the people of Africa.
His new job made me think of this trip today. He'll be gone for years no doubt in his training. Perhaps to Africa where he can help translate?
Although his English is perfect and he was going to community college to get the basics for being a doctor. So I'm thinking that is where the military will use him. It brings tears to my eyes, I miss him already.
For so long America and Africa have needed to heal the wounds of the past centuries. The Obamas trip to Africa may be the beginning of that.
Unfortunately, when I searched for pictures of this trip elsewhere, I ended up with the results of wingnuts saying how the only help Obama would give would be genocide. Ah, some people need to open their minds and learn some world history...
