(15,703 posts)And ya know what? That's the first I've heard of Colum McCann! This is apparently the book with Frederick Douglass touring Ireland and George Mitchell in it, which I have got to get:
Taking place in three countries and a half-dozen different time periods, the novel traces two histories: that of a particular family as well as Irish-American relations in general. Starting with the worlds first transatlantic flight, before jumping backward and forward in time, McCann shows how woven together modern American and Irish identities are, from the influx of immigrants in the 1800s to the Good Friday Agreement.
The first section of the novel focuses on three specific trips to Ireland: the first flight across the Atlantic, Frederick Douglass journey to preach abolition and buy his freedom, and U.S. Senator George Mitchells peace brokering between North and South in the 1990s.
The Duggan family finds itself in the background of these stories, witnesses to these men and their accomplishments, while the second section of the book tells the history of the Duggans themselves, tracing how brief encounters with the men like Douglass and Mitchell impacted their lives. McCann manages to place the worldly and domestic side by side, showing how each affects the other.

(87,272 posts)As for your OP. So few know that he carries our weight on his shoulders.
He does this every single day. Against all hate filled attacks on him, he protects and serves the people.

And people get so bent out of shape when I point out that Democracy Now, Noam's home-on-the-air, is a propaganda show. So let's see what the professor has for us today:
The Obama administration is dedicated to increasing terrorism, he went on. In fact, its doing it all over the world. Obama, first of all, is running the biggest terrorist operation that exists, maybe in history. The drone assassination campaigns, which are just part of it All of these operations, they are terror operations.
Yes Noam, calling Obama the world's biggest terrorist is racist. Very.
Presidentin' while Black. There is far more racism to this that I initially thought. Truly sad that we get an able President that aspires to fixing many wrongs that we have lived with for so long, and he gets knee capped because of his race.
I don't think most really know they are doing this - they just follow the loudest howler. So gullible, it's unbelievabel. I'm reading now that posters who have had nothing good to say about Obama now claim they have supported him all these years, but this NSA thing made them change their minds. Unbelievable bullshit going on here - the flat out fabrications the GOP would be proud of.
