(11,272 posts)While I would love Jamie Raskin to move up, and he certainly has the profile for it, Maryland's Democratic Bench is pretty deep. Anthony Brown (PG County) and Dutch Ruppersberger (Baltimore County) are also very capable Congresspeople. You also have progressives like Kweisi Mfune and Heather Mizeur in the mix as well. Heather is making a good run to unseat Andy Harris (R-Embarrassment). David Trone in Upper MoCo had the bucks to buy himself the Western MD district, but may not have the goodwill to be Senator for the whole state. You also have a wide-open Governor's race in 2022 with a lot of good candidates. The losers may decide to throw in for Senator in 2024.
On the other side, you have Larry Hogan, Michael Steele, and a whole bunch of crazy. If Harris gets unseated in 2022, expect him to go for the Republican nomination for Senator. Hogan is VERY popular in MD, even with Dems, because of his handling of COVID. A big plus for him is that he's LOATHES TFG. He wants to run for President, but he won't get very far because of that. He may decide to throw his hat in for Senator instead.

(8,617 posts)Paul Sarbanes served MD for 30 years in the US Senate and was well respected. John Sarbanes runs for the US Senate. Jon Cardin, Ben Cardins nephew runs for the US House in MD-3.
Anthony Brown is either going to run for Governor in 2022 or the US Senate in 2024.
A matchup between Anthony Brown-D and Larry Hogan-R will be similar to the 2012 HI US Senate Race between Hirono-D and Lingle-R.
In the 2002 HI Governors Race, Linda Lingle-R narrowly defeated Lt Governor Mazie Hirono-D, Hirono-D the got elected to the US House in 2006. In 2012. Both Hirono-D and Lingle-R ran for the US Senate and Hirono-D won by a landslide margin. I could see a similar situation happening in MD with Brown-D and Hogan-R in 2024. The other Democratic candidates Raskin,Delaney, and Trone are from Western MD. Ruppersberger and Mfume are in their late 70s. The other candidate I have forgot to mention is Frank Kravitol, former US Representative from MD-1 Eastern MD from 2008 to 2010.
