Tell W3C: We don't want the Hollyweb

Hollywood is at it again. Its latest ploy to take over the Web? Use its influence at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to weave Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) into HTML5 — in other words, into the very fabric of the Web.

1. what w3c needs to keep in mind..

..and what i bet hollywood secretly already knows tho they can't admit it.. is..

they can't win. they can only slow progress. they can't halt it. if the w3c sells out then we'll just invent HTML6 and leave them the eff out of it. it's like when microsoft tried to destroy netscape. or when both apple and ms tried to quash the open source movement and linux. or when the federal gov't tried to destroy free strong crypto. fail. fail. FAIL. for one simple reason..

..put together, we the random and anonymous can out-code them any day of the week and yeah, 'we' have resources too.

let 'em try. they won't take over the internet. they'll lose it entirely.

3. Is this even possible for w3c?

Right now video comes in the form of plugins which w3c doesn't control.

As you said if w3c ads drm people will not use the html5 version of video, but they will just use plugins instead rather than change html. So can w3c control what a plugin is allowed to do? It doesn't seem to me like they have that kind of influence anyway.

they can only invent standards they can't enforce them. if we don't like their standards we can always invent our own.

I think this could potentially affect our ability to access information, maybe even on websites like DU.

We do alot of "fair use" re-posting and aggregating around here. It's called having a conversation about the world we live in. DRM in HTML5 potentially restrict that conversation if I understand this correctly.

5. W3C, don't sell out!

I'm against this 100%. Doesn't the entertainment industry have enough influence with our governments? Now they're able to even seduce W3C. Tim Berners-Lee must be spinning in his grave! Oh, wait! He's not dead. My mistake lol.

The point is, if these jerks have enough money to throw at governments and even W3C to try to put the brakes on piracy, why don't they just come up with their own way to encrypt their media? Why do they need the DOJ to arrest people and shut down websites and now W3C to try to alter the very nature of the Web?
