hihowdi. am running a old mac book pro, early 2014 . almost 10 yo.

core duo etc.
updated to big sur a while ago. so far no hitches but tends to lock up and stomp on everything . i either have to do the 3 finger salute and or absolute power down by pushing the power button. sometimes i have to do the 3 fingered salute 3 times before the os gets the nick.(signal to reset).
also safary, not default browser, loves to pop up on its own .otherwise a good os. always bugs in the first stable release . happy post year du.

I am using an even older MacBook Pro (17-inch, mid 2009 version) sporting OS X El Capitan (Version 10.11.6). She's maxed out at 8GB of Ram on a 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. Recently I helped her out with a 1TB SSD along with a new battery.

I utilize strictly Apple software, as I noticed early on that this OS absolutely hated anything from Microsoft (so NO MS Office here), and detested all things Google (so NO docs, sheets, nor slides either). She is very happy to provide constant good service as long as I play by her rules...

Also, Happy New Year DU (as well).

Until about two weeks ago, I was running a circa 2013 MacBook Air. The last couple of OS updates seem to have slowed it to a crawl.

I hit the bullet and upgraded. Nine years is a heck of a good run, considering what I used to get out of MS based laptops over the years.

I might fire up the old one, clean it off and bring up something simple from scratch, but it’s great to have a zippy machine again.

Could you elaborate a little here? Are you saying there is something called "Safary" that pops up occasionally? On its own?

I hope I'm misunderstanding you, because otherwise that sounds a whole like some malware has been installed on your machine.

Just fyi, I've got a 2013 MBP running Big Sur (11.6.2) and it's fine.

register. My old Apple repair guy closed down. Wonder if I take it to the Apple store if they can put on a new keyboard?

Although the folks at your local Apple store(s) are mostly helpful, they typically no longer have replacement parts for our 'older' macs. I suggest you try OWC, which provided me with a new SSD and a new battery for my 2009 MacBook Pro.
