I've had no problems but I have a pretty good security set-up.

I've heard that Zoom works better with the browser Chrome but I haven't had any problems using Safari.

We have 2 more Mac laptops, a 2012 MacBook Pro and a 2018 bottom-of-the-line MacBook Air. We've had zero problems with them, too.

Hope all works out for you. Do you have a VPN?

"A VPN connection establishes a secure connection between you and the internet. Via the VPN, all your data traffic is routed through an encrypted virtual tunnel. This disguises your IP address when you use the internet, making its location invisible to everyone. A VPN connection is also secure against external attacks."
Basically it is a Virtual Private Network.

Mine is a desktop hard wired to cable from the wall.

The MacBook is connected via WiFi..

OK, read about that, too complicated for me to install it.

Thanks, anyway.

I'm not the leader of the class, so I can join the session without logging in to a Zoom account. The link to the class is private and given only to participants, so I think it's low risk. I have a VPN as well. (I use TunnelBear, which I've been happy with for several years.)

I know in the Spring of 2020 there were reports of people "Zoombombing," or getting unauthorized access to Zoom meetings. There are security measures in place now to prevent this, if the host uses them.

Zoom has put together a document detailing best practices for using their platform: https://zoom.us/docs/doc/Securing%20Your%20Zoom%20Meetings.pdf
