My iPad has stopped giving notifications.

The sound works okay, but it doesn't go "bink" anymore when I plug it in, and it doesn't give me any audible alert sounds for email, texts or anything. When I go to settings and try out the different alerting sounds, they work fine, so it's not muted or anything.

Any clues? I've already tried resetting it.

My sounds are hit and miss. I change sounds and they work for a while then quit again. The only thing that sounds consistently is the earthquake alert, which is a good thing I guess.
