OK, I'm going to update to Mavericks.

I haven't done it as yet because I'm still a newbie when it come to Macs and haven't 'got under the hood' to much. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Are there any tips, tricks or traps I should know about?

It's five years old and needs to be replaced, but I want it to hang in there until the (rumored) new rentina iMacs are released, hopefully soon.

I think Mavericks is designed to work with newer machines sporting more RAM (the new iMacs come with 8 by default; the older ones 4), and since I'm running some high-powered Adobe graphics the slow-down in speed is really noticeable. What used to be a great iMac now huffs and puffs through Creative Cloud software.

My suggestion: give some thought to the programs you run and your machines' speed and memory before upgrading. Then again, you may have no choice as I imagine Apple will drop support of Snow Leopard when Yosemite is released.

CS4 Illustrator and InDesign work, but won't print. Save to a PDF and they will print. No problem with PhotoShop. Check your version of Word or MS Office also.

Other than that, I like Mavericks. I upgraded to 16 gigs of RAM.

Can't access my remote cameras because of some embedded protection implementation Apple threw in.

Not a problem accessing them using either Firefox or Chrome, though -- they ask if I want to allow the plugin to run.

I'm getting a little annoyed with these Apple software bugs lately.

Didn't take long to install and it went smoothly.
The laptop is six yrs old, 2 g of ram and I just wanted to upgrade to a more recent version. snow leopard was not available and it went ahead and installed Mavericks. Now it is so slow and I am constantly restarting it. Wish Mavericks could be rolled back.
