And it is not connected all the time, only wifi version for my IPad. The sending more data to apple gives me pause, but I wonder if Siri can be used for dictation

(51,122 posts)Look on the lower left of the onscreen keyboard. If enabled, there is a little microphone key.
To enable it on iOS 6 go to: Settings > General > Keyboard > Dictation
Yes, you have to be connected to Apple's servers to perform dictation. But there was a widely reported story in July that Apple is working on adding offline dictation to iOS 7.
To do dictation, simply touch the microphone key on the onscreen keyboard.

Seems to me there used to be something specifically for dictation, but now I can't find it. Maybe it disappeared when they introduced Siri.
Okay, it looks like you can ask Siri to dictate a note.

I have to use dictation from time to time, and it's back!!!
